I don't think sound cards have changed much over the past ~5 years or so. I have an X-Fi Fatal1ty Titanium myself (don't laugh at me, I took advantage of a typo in a Best Buy ad lol) and I love it.

Had a Creative Titanium. Changed to On-board and i really cant tell the difference. One time Sound card makes sense is if you got the Audio equipments that can take advantage of them.

Definitely. You can't expect a $20 pair of speakers from Office Depot to sound tremendously better than on-board audio just because you bought a $200 sound card. I recently bought a pair of Dayton B652 shelf speakers and a Dayton 12" sub. I compared between my on-board and X-Fi, and the on-board seriously cannot compare. All across the board, (lows, mids, highs) the X-Fi slaughters my onboard. Music is so much more vibrant and games are way more immersive. Even then, the Daytons aren't top notch speakers. They're insanely good for $30 though, so I somewhat retract my comment about the $20 speakers (not fully because I specifically referred to Office Depot-level speakers thumb.gif). I appreciate Pioneerisloud so much for recommending them to me...

This.

Get decent audio equipment first, then bother with getting a decent soundcard.

I listen to my audio via a pair of AKG k240's, sure they're not the second coming of jesus, but I notice major differences in sound quality between my dedicated audio card and the onboard chip.
