A sound card is meant for 2.1 Bookshelf speakers or headphones or a Logitech type setup. A 5.1 HTIAB doesn't need or require a sound card, HDMI out from your GPU will work much better.

I thought TOSLINK fiber-optic S/PDIF supports 5.1/7.1 as well as the coax cable.Originally Posted by admflameberg
Those that are using sound cards for their receivers are doing it for the encoder function of the sound card which encodes 5.1 analog into 5.1 digital for games. Which is needed for gaming in Digital as games are not already encoded. The other reason is for the gaming features of a sound card.
Then like my self which owns a external dac amp, The reason I have this X-Fi in using optical is because I need the features of the X-FI .

And games that have built in 5.1/7.1 can only output it to analog and need a soundcard to make it digital? So it won't work via HDMI out to a receiver after all?
I thought virtual surround/CMSS3D isn't needed with a good pair of headphones that have good spatial awareness(AD700,DT-770)?

Games I have tried, Diablo2, Counter strike source and CS:GO, Doom 3, Crysis, Witcher 2 and Borderlands 2.
