if you're going to listen to music in stereo, yes it would sound the same, however X-Fi provides CMSS-3D which can be amazing for many games and is something optical out from the motherboard (something not always available with on-board motherboard audio) would not provide

It does support 5.1 and 7.1 but for sources that are already encoded. Games are not encoded already which why you would have to use the DD live and DTS Encoders to encode the games first. Before they out out in 5.1/7.1.

Currently using an X-Fi Champion Fatal1ty - will getting one of these make much of a difference? I do use good headphones so yes, I do have a need for a sound card before anyone asks. I play a lot of FPS games.

I assume "ACM" is Audio Compression Manager or something - will the Zx make much of a difference over the Z?

YEah, you will especially if you use headphones. The Z series of cards come with a headphone amp. I have found the sound quality to be better than the Fatality.

ACM is audio control module, it's simply a place where you can plug in a pair of headphone and mic and control the volume. It's not something that I would pay for anyway, especially since the cards come with a headphone socket seperate to the front, rear, and center/sub sockets. So you never have to go behind your machine to plug the heapdhones in and out. It's all software swtiching now :-)

Aha. My headphones came with an extension cord that I run into the back of my PC anyway. Sounds like I wouldn't need the Zx!
