Apparently you don't remember but there were games using software audio back then.  It didn't start with just hardware accelerated audio.

Lol, yea pretty much every game I played back then used EAX, so I didn't pay that much attention. I wish I had bookmarked the post, but I read last year Microsoft was working on a new way to bring Hardware Audio back that wouldn't cause issues like it did before.

i used the Recon3D sound from alienware laptop. Decent power on HD 558 but nothing amazing , I don't even bother with sound cards because of my Fiio e7 amp.

Also the design on these are garbage (imo)
