2 months with EK Supremacy Nickel

Hi,
I thought it would be worth sharing my experience with EK Supremacy Nickel.
I have had the block for more than 2 months now.

1st few weeks I only used it with a distilled water and simple bio clear to kill all the critters. As a reservoir I used Zalman's Reserator, which all know is made of aluminium and just one copper 120mm rad.

Then I moved to EK Coolant and added another 120mm copper rad to lower the temps.

After 2 months I made a complete revision of my loop, so I stripped everything down, including putting the EK waterblock apart.
I was worried to see some nickel flaking, but no! The surface was as smooth as 1st time when I installed the block.
The only problem I saw was some gunk, just under injection point! That looked like some fluff mixed with plasticizer, yes plasticizer!
I used original Zalman's tubes to and from the Reserator and must say they are very poor quality. After just a week they started getting cloudy..., so whoever still uses Zalman's tubes change them ASAP!

I cleaned the block with a toothbrush and put the loop together, with new Masterkleer tubes and internal Alphacool reservoir. As a coolant I used Mayhem's Pastel Blueberry, I will also add another rad once 2 Akasas Apache 120mm will arrive.

I wouldnt use coolant, I would stay with distilled for better temps coolant has an alcohol and is only good for cars to keep the liquid from freezing, and for companies to make money. Not sure of exact reason but alcohol/coolant has different cooling properties compared to straight water.

I did hear that copper and aluminum is bad.

Hi all,
You are all right aluminium's and nickel's anodic index is different by 0.45V and aluminium and copper is 0.40V, which means that over long period of time a galvanic corrosion on the copper/nickel could accrue when mixed with aluminium. That is why I moved to EK Coolant pretty quick as it contains some corrosion inhibitors. I also agree that water is better coolant than anything else as it has a thermal capacity of 4186J/Kg-C at 22ºC and a density of about 1g/mL, when for example glycol's (commonly used in cars) thermal capacity is almost twice less! However we do not use a pure glycol too cool our systems down! Additives used in common watercooling coolants do impair water cooling abilities a bit, but other abilities of those coolants like killing germs/bacteria or inhibiting the corrosion are more beneficial than loosing a degree or 2 in cooling process.

Even with brass/nickel/copper in the loop galvanic corrosion can accrue as their galvanic index is up to 0.10V, it will obviously slower than with the aluminium, but still could be a problem if a corrosion inhibitor in the loop would not be used...
