I'm considering upgrading to 8GB of ram on my 790i ultra board from the 4GB it currently has. The problem is my board was designed to run 1.8-2.0v memory, which is no longer available new. I've heard of people using 1.65v 1600MHz modules but many of the ones they've used are no longer available. Has anyone here had any luck using 1.65v 1600MHz 2GB modules on these boards?

memory upgrade for 790i ultra?

I've never heard of not being able to run high voltage ram on a board (anything above 1.65v for example would crash GA Z68 boards) but there was no limit to how low you could go.
When looking at the evga site for the board, they actually recommended 1.5v RAM
http://www.datamemorysystems.com/EVGA.com-memory/nForce-790i-Ultra-SLI-775-A1-Version
Newegg shows one of these boards supporting DDR3 2000(OC)/1800(OC)/1333
1600 is not supported for the XFX board. (EVGA and other manufactures may be different)
Silly OCN for going down, made my reply take for ever

It's not a matter of not being able to run high voltage memory on this board, it's a matter of running low voltage memory. My board is an EVGA OEM board made for my HP. The board was designed to run 1.8-2.0v memory up to 2000MHz, but the only memory available today is 1.65v and under. I know people have gotten lower voltage memory to work with these boards, but it's really hit or miss.

Sorry, I wrote that wrong. I meant to say "I've never heard of someone not being able to run lower voltage memory"
As long as your motherboard\cpu can support the RAM speeds, as far as I know, it should be fine. You can also try a local retailer, then return the RAM if it does not work.

That's just it, this motherboard doesn't officially support Memory under 1.8v. I've heard of many cases where people weren't able to run lower voltage memory on these boards. This was among the first platforms to use DDR3. I'm just curious if anyone on the forum has had any luck running 1.65v memory at it's rated speed on this chipset.

You can try to find something on ebay.
Especially models from OCZ like:
Platinum Series OCZ3P20004GK 1.9V 2x2GB
ReaperX Series OCZ3RPX1333EB4GK 1.85V 2x2GB
Flex EX Series OCZ3FXE20004GK 2.0V 2x2GB
OCZ has many models with high voltage.
Or something like my Blazers with 2.1V

I've considered it actually, but I'd prefer to steer clear of second hand purchases. I've even heard of people running 16GB of 1.65v memory on these boards even though the maximum memory supported is 8GB.

I think you're missing the point of this thread. I want to know if anyone on here has already tried it so I don't have to play guess and check. If no one on this forum has had any luck, then yes I'll have to go out and try out some lower voltage ram and Hopefully get lucky, but if someone here already has done so then it would make it a painless upgrade for me.
