I would be OK with this, or at least some device that is mandatory to put into your car that keeps you from texting if the car is in drive. Texting while driving is ignorant and only a fool with a death wish would do such a thing. I like to think I'm better then doing stupid things like that. Even though I have done it before I wouldn't recommend it and haven't done it in over a year. The Bluetooth built into the car pretty much takes care of it for me, can read me my texts and I can voice to text back. If you want to text and drive get a bluetooth headset and the proper software.

Exactly! Why should we have to take responsibility for our own actions. We should just invent technology the is responsible for us, and then force everyone to use it. Then we could all just...do nothing.

While texting and driving is stupid, I would totally oppose any device that prevented texting in a car. There is a way to responsibly send texts while in a car. Would you also be in favor of a breathalyser system that continuously monitored if you were drinking while driving? Like I said earlier, it's not a problem that can be solved with legislation or more technology. It needs to be a conscious choice made by people and they need to care about driving. Lots of people say they'll never drink and drive, but they'll do all sorts of other things that are equally as dangerous, like texting while driving. Education, not Orwellian counter-measures, will do more to stop this problem.

If anything a part of the issue in the US is that you get the licence to early. Also the informal training is probably pretty ineffective in teaching traffic law.
I also don't understand why you rip on people that treat cars as just transportation. I my self am a car enthusiast and drive a Porsche 944. My parents on the other hand have owned among others a '99 Corolla and a Neon '98. Both are good cars and I would even call the neon a great car as it's 2.0 133HP had exceptional torque and the low ground clearance made it very stable at high speed (like 200 km/h). You don't need to be a passionate driver to be good driver.

I can't think of a more soulless car than a Toyota Corolla. Maybe a Toyota Camry. The Neon at least had something that resembled a personality, as terrible of a car as it was.
This should help explain the point.

~snip~

Also, in regards to teaching kids earlier, better driving talent can do nothing except make the roads safer. I would be willing to bet that 90% of the driving population has no idea how to handle their car in an emergency. Oversteer, understeer, they're foreign concepts to most people. No idea what to do if they encounter either those two things. The only way anyone ever gets tested on their ability to handle a car in adverse conditions is if it happens to be raining on the day they go to take the test, and they rarely get above 25mph. This is all in the States, mind you. I'd love to take the Finnish driving lessons.

Would teaching kids earlier give them inflated confidence? I'm sure some of them would. But it should also weed out the people who don't care about it. I stand by my opinion of "If you don't care about it, you're not going to be good at it, thus you should not be allowed to do it."

Teaching kids to drive early would work in an ideal world. But Ive seen adults who have maaany years of experience drive worst then some teens fresh on the road. My theory; when you get enough experience you get cocky, when you first start out you are cautious. Do you still drive with 2 hands on the wheel, seat straight up and no music on for distractions? I dont think so.rolleyes.gif

An incredibly hasty assumption.  I know sophomores who have permits, they should not drive anywhere.  If anything, mature people usually wait longer to get their permit/license because they know at age 16 they won't be safe drivers.

Well, with my old Phone, I could text without looking at the phone easily.

im also 6 foot 1 driving a Honda Civic 98 4 door and can earily drive with my knee as well.

With the smart phone if I need ot make a text i just hit the speach to text and thats easy peazy

but gernerally if Im driving, Il put my headphones on and just call the person, why risk more than needed.

I must admit that in Jersey I have Never actually witnessed someone get into an accident because they were texting

however, i have witnessed many break the Road Maners while texting, heres a recent example,

Leaving a Small Shopping Complex, Trying ot take a right Turn and merge onto the Main Street of my Small Town, where the Red Light is no more than 5 car lengths away from where I am.

Cars keep pulling up to the red light and stop, and I sitll have not had the chance to get in. Finally there is no where else for cars to go so I start making my turn, Only to Abruptly Stop because a Turd in a Tundra, whos Texting (while his Wife or GF is texting in passanger) just Keep rolling into where I was OGING to be, and then Block the exit so I cant go Anywhere at all....

What a D

Its unfortunate, someone mentioned that they see more Anti Text while driving Commercials than they do Anti Drunk Driver, but when it comes down to it, we all know a hand full of people, all of us do, who DO drive after Drinking, who have done so For Years and state that its ok because it is them or that they are used to it etc.

The Commercials etc do not seem to work, threats of DUI and Loss of License don't seem to matter. the potential to Lose your or worse yet a Random persons Life doesnt stop them either.

Not all PSA's are all that great either, theya re really messed up and often over dramatic and probobly half the truth.

Liek Kid A was killed Because he sent a text to his friend while driving. what they Forgot to tell you is that Kid A was Mentally Retarded , Stole the Car and was High as a Kite. ok ok I know thats not likely but still.

Kid B was Killed for sending the text ***?? , but it was after his other friend just sent him a Picture of him giving the BatWing (From the Movie Waiting)

Kid C was killed after sending the text "He" what You didn know is ten minutes earlier he left the bar and Backed into a Row of Harleys, where the Bikers Promtly chased him, the text was meant to read "help Me!" but hit a telephone polke because he was panicking while texting.

I simply think that stupid people should not be allowed Cell Phones,

maybe they need an aptitude test or an IQ test or soemthing when signing the contract, even Drivers License should involve a bit more in my opinion. Ive seen the Dumbest of Dumb people get a license. Even people whoa re almost Blind can drive...

int he long run, I dont approve of anything tha tracks people. Big Brother needs to move out.

I have an idea, how about you educate your kid before you buy them a phone and a car?

And then trust them instead of spying on them and disabling their phones. I guess we should also put monitors in their stomachs that make them throw up when they drink alcohol, and put cameras in their eyes that turn their retinas off when they view objectionable material.

On a semi related note, once I was heading to the ski slopes near Denver and there was a frozen lake that had a ice driving course set up. You could take your car out and learn how to drive in slippery conditions in just about the worst conditions you would ever find south of Alaska. One day I would like to do something like that. In the meantime, I'v practiced driving in slippery conditions in a HUGE empty parking lot when we get a good snow cover. Living in the south, few people go out when it snows even a little, so the streets are empty and I'v got off road tires on a Jeep that chew through snow like it's not even there. It's also fun to help pull people out of a ditch when I see people stranded.

That is awesome. US should definitely have something like this especially in the bad snow areas. I have been working as a snow plower in an F350 (with a sick new V-plow!) during snow down here in MD for a few seasons. I can't tell you how many cars I see stranded/stuck, abandoned, crashed. And not to mention a bunch of people begging me to help them because they were morons and thought AWD means perfect traction in everything, everytime. Even saw my buddy in front of me lock his wheels when attempting to stop at a stop sign because he was going way to fast and slid on snow/ice. Even after I told him 1000 times before we went out that he should drive super slow because I knew that was gonna happen. We were 18 at the time and he thought he could handle it. Well he handled his car right into another car and T-boned it.

I know MD has some course you can take, I think its called defensive driving or something like that. They teach you what to do in various dangerous situations when driving like snow/ice, water, etc. The only downside is I hear its like 500$+. But thats nothing compared a shock trauma ride and ICU stay.

I've been a cop for going on 11 years now. I've been to plenty of shootings, stabbings, assaults of many kinds. No matter how violent the nature of the call, they have nothing on the pure carnage of a nasty car accident and I have seen some nasty ones and they generally involve teenagers.

There are definitely people who can handle talking on the phone while driving and those who can't. I cite the driving behavior (Unsafe lane travel) on the one who can't. Not the talking on the cell phone on both. I've never been a fan of "nanny state" laws and I thank God for officer's discretion. Because based on the totality of my experience there are just some people with the skill to do it and others who can't.

As for texting, I'm sorry StormX2, you're not that good. (driving with your knee?) We qualify on a emergency vehicles operations course (EVOC) and have tested this with some damn good drivers. We drive in pursuits operating a radio, emergency lighting/siren equipment and a laptop on a fixed stand.

With no traffic, just operating a phone is a lot to juggle. ABC 20/20 came and road with our department and did a study with us. There is no doubt. No matter how good you think you are; you ain't!
