[CNET] Windows 8 Review

Portions of this review are based on CNET's First Takes for the three preview builds of Windows 8.

Installation
The Windows 8 installation process is remarkably simple, and belies the massive changes you are about to wreak on your operating system. Run the installer, drop in the license key when asked, and allow the computer to reboot.

On the Toshiba DX1215 built for Windows 7 but running the Windows 8 Release Preview that we upgraded, installation took around 10 minutes -- not including the hinkiness we encountered with the Microsoft-supplied USB stick. The syncing process took longer, and getting the RTM to the same point of usability as the RP was added took almost another 20 minutes. Microsoft said this was longer than normal, but not out of the realm of possibility.

Microsoft documentation notes people installing Windows 8 over Windows 7 will get to keep their Windows settings, personal files, and programs.

One cosmetic but welcome change is in the way shortcuts for desktop applications appear in the Start screen. In the preview, each one was a tiny icon surrounded by a big block of wasted space. There is still plenty of wasted space, but the icons are now bigger and centralised, improving their appearance (see screenshot at top).

Looks like a decent upgrade to me, especially for $40.redface.gif

I do think MS did a lot of under the hood stuff with win8, still on the fence though

While I agree it's not the most innovative, you could say that about just about any software. It takes some fiddling and playing to get used to but it's not bad.

Win 7 works fine. I'm taking the same line I did when they released Vista. Wait at least another version is my take, YMMV.

Just keep the windows UI scheme!!!!

If you upgrade, does Windows 8 keep a bunch of old files that Windows 7 did when upgrading?

Yes, it is confusing and inconsistent, needs more apps, and is tricky for existing Windows users getting started; but it is also the most capable tablet operating system out there and a useful upgrade for desktop users. Don't dismiss it.

That's a fair summation, I'll be upgrading both machines, one's already been running for a month now, love it.
I hope they appease the folk who are disillusioned about the desktop experience, I find it a joy, but I know there are a lot of people don't, and some who will just refuse to give it a try.

I like Gizmondo review of Windows 8. Their 'negatives' and 'TEST NOTES' they give about Windows 8 is the same ones I have while using Windows 8... The thing is that those negatives irritate my a lot, and for me and my family we wont be using Windows 8. Also the negativity towards Windows 8 is just growing and growing (from users and developers) and IMO it will affect sales big time thumb.gif this will be a Vista 2.0.

I think you're reading far too much into what is said here by a select few who are afraid of change. The majority will use Windows 8. The majority won't care. WE are not the majority.

P.S.: There was nothing wrong with Vista.
