64gb vs 128gb ssd as system drive.

Hey guys I am going to pick up my new 42 inch tv (75 bucks for a 1080p hdmi tv!) from a friend's place and I also need to pick up a new drive for my HTPC project that has been sitting around forever (used temporarily as a server.) This pc will be used strictly as a HTPC running windows 7 (possibly will dual boot ubuntu for fun) as my first HTPC. I was going to get a 64 gig M4 for 63 dollars from Microcenter however I am going north and microcenter is south, it would take too long to pick it up today. I can get a 128 gig M4 for about 93 dollars or so from tiger direct (price matched to microcenter) which is on the way home.

I am trying to convince myself that the 128gig SSD will not be a waste of money. I am adding 2 3TB 7200 rpm drives later for data (for now I will stream from my sig rig) so data space should be under control.

How big are your system partitions on your HTPCs? Will the 64 be too small to dual boot and have room to play with? I will be buying the drive within 4 hours so your feedback is greatly appreciated.

It is not a waste of money

128GB drives are faster than 64GB because they have more nand and iops. Read all the benchmarks, the larger the drive, the faster it is(minor performance though)

Get the 128GB if you can.

anti this. ssd's are amazing. 64gb might be a tad small if you plan on installing anything besides the OS and daily apps. currently using a 128g crucial M4 and have loved every sec of it

Wish the 256gb had been as cheap as it is now. Love my 128gb crucial m4 to death but Will be adding a 256 or 512gb SSD next tax time. Don't bother only getting 64gb as windows will use a good chunk of it plus your day to day apps.

The 128GB will be a little faster maybe, but the 64GB should be fine. Since you have 6TB in storage via other drives, you should be fine giving each partition like ~30GB. Windows install takes like 8gb? But i dont know how much space Ubuntu takes.

Oh, though if you do go 64GB, make sure temp files and page files go on your storage drive. Otherwise, you'll take up space quick on the SSD.

64GB will be perfectly fine for an HTPC even with dual boot.
