Perhaps a musing.. or thoughts..I dont know...
I want to be excited for Windows 8, I want to go run out and grab a copy on day 1 just like I have with EVERY Windows release (Yes, Even Win ME, Even if i returned ME the next day.. Yes they shockingly exchanged it for 2000) and the only upgrade I didnt whole heartedly embrace was Windows ME (For obvious reasons)
But... well... I cant help but feel Win 8 just isnt for me...
Heck, I was a very happy Vista x64 user and I point out that the Aero interface and Vista itself brought me back to the PC world, I DETESTED Windows XP's look, Though I still -used- Windows XP because it still, functionally, was very good, I just hated the overall appearance of it, it lead to me leaving to Mac OS for my "productive" computing in fact... Windows 7 is easily my favorite version of windows, it doesnt annoy me, its stable as a rock for me, and despite one or two annoyances (Like the fact my icons currently will not stay where i want them) it works very very well...
I was also one of the people to point out to others that Vista really was nowhere NEAR as terrible as people thought it was (Most problems being caused by trying to run it on hardware that couldnt run it or device manufacturers not providing good driver support for it) and that they really should give it a shot because its a very nice OS....
And now I feel like I'm one of those people I criticized for "not keeping with it" I suddenly feel old, and out of date, merely because I'm not excited over Windows 8, and because at this point I dont see myself upgrading to it as while I'd love a lot of the improvements, I cant deal with the loss of my start menu and the entire treatment of desktop mode...
I'm simply afraid Win 8 will not even work for me, I have my 24" primary monitor hooked up, which i use for my gaming, photography and generally everything when im sitting at my desk and then I have my Pioneer Elite SC-27 and my 58" Plasma hooked up as "monitor 2" for watching recorded TV shows, listening to music and etc.. is Windows 8 going to let me do this exactly as I do it now? is it going to be a massive hassle? And I have no desire to replace my 24" display, its an IPS display that is meant for my photo editing and such (Color accuracy and that) I dont want fingerprints all over it either, and Im really not that into controlling stuff with touch... it just doesnt work well enough yet to me (I have a tablet and a smartphone, I'm happy with touchscreens on those devices, but on my PC I'd rather use a mouse/keyboard)
I run tons of windows at the same time.. Multiple firefox windows with various bits of info/things im reading pulled up and minimized in the background...every messanger...then sometimes i have lightroom and a game open on top of all of it.... This is where I think Win 8 is going to be annoying/completely inefficient....
Am I going to be allowed to keep my computer running 24/7? Am I going to come home sometime to find windows just magically decided to do something and then sit there and have to fix it because it ran some update that bricked my computer/messed something up/broke something? (I HAVE had windows updates completely brick my computer or massively mess things up, Especially if it tries to update any drivers or anything..) Or worse am i going to come home and find that its done god knows what on me... I am a control freak, I like telling my computer what to do, not vice versa.. Precisely because as I said, I've had updates go catastrophically wrong on me...
And.. well.. am I, despite how much I am disliking it, going to eventually be -forced- to Windows 8 because DX11.1 and such are going to require it, Or games will start requiring it.... ON the gaming front all I can think of is Games For Windows Live which is a horrible abomination that gave me more problems with any game I owned that used it than anything else I can think of in recent memory... Are we in for more of this?
I guess despite my desire for the newest stuff I've always been a big fan of "if its not really -broken- dont fix it" and in this case while I can see the benefits windows 8 has for your average users, I feel theres a lot of other users who are being ignored, Those of us who really want the performance improvements and that which Windows 8 has to offer but want the traditional mouse and keyboard-centric interface to go with it...I'm not sure its going to flop.. but I'm also not sure its the right move...
But hey, Please come in here and prove me wrong, Maybe things have changed.. From what I've read they havnt and Microsoft has scrambled to plug the "holes" that were letting people bypass the start screen and use the desktop exclusively...

To summarize my opinion: I tried Win8 CP, it was worse that I expected, but I guess my expectations were pretty high at the time. Then I tried Win8 RP with my expectations checked, and I love it
Cheers, mate!
