1. try disabling IP v6 on your win7 machine (and xp if it has it...
2. a lot of people use "LAN SPEED TEST" (www.totusoft.com)...but if i remember its not free...but use something similar...the posts before are exactly right, do not go by the windows transfer dialog box, what a POS
3. on your win7 machine, make sure you are actually connected at 1 Gbps speed and not some 10/100 variance (see image below)
4. you said you already tested your metrics on the HDDs themselves...maybe try a diff program to double check> "performance test" is a good one

Thanks for trying but;

A) IPV6 already disabled (long before this switch)
B) Win 7 machine already at 1GB connection - so is XP machine
C) Already tested speeds and transfers with different benchmark tests (HD Tune/Crystal Disk Mark/AIDA)

What does your Cpu utilization look like during transfers?

^ ^ ^ ! ! ! biggrin.gif It's underlined and bolded for you - the 7 machine I did not monitor CPU usage because it seems rather dumb to (ought to be more than enough power - Phenom 2 X6) - the XP is a 3.3Ghz Sempron.

OK so - I got an Intel Pro 100/1000 GT, popped it in the XP machine and did another test - same exact results.

So, in talking to a friend of mine who is an networking nut, he mentioned that it is most likely a protocol problem on the XP machine.

My next and probably last resort here for testing will be a live cd (as mentioned already) and then if I'm still not satisfied I think I'll just finally (after all these years tongue.gif) update the XP machine to Windows 7 or Vista if the live cd turns out to be faster transfer than XP.

Anyone know, is it SNMP that is out of date with XP in comparison to 7? Which protocol might be the problem?

Intel NICs have built-in diagnostics and line tests.

Open up the control panel for it and try the tests.
Once again...

Sweet thanks. I'll give it a go.

( edit )

Cable test is just barely over the half way mark from poor/good but is in the 'good' section. I'll swap cables til I get the best one, but otherwise there are no other issues that are showing up.

Still haven't done a Live (Linux) test yet but will, just been busy (and lazy).
