Can't increase voltage - Gigabyte 7970 WindForce 3X GV-R797OC-3GD - Page 14

Just in case anyone was wondering, I recently ordered one of these from newegg without thoroughly researching issues and also because of how good the early reviews I read said that it would overclock. (it came rev 2.1 with F72 bios) My last windforce card wasn't locked so I guess I just figured this one wouldn't be either. After trying to do a 100-150 mhz minor overclock and not getting past 1050 I ended up here.

At any rate, I followed Twisteds instructions to a tee, and here's how it went down for me.

  1. Made my USB Stick a DOS boot stick, with rufus.
  2. Put tahiti.rom and Atiflash on the root of USB Stick (leaving the files alone rufus added as well)
  3. Rebooted to Mobo Bios to make sure it would boot from USB stick first, also made sure my 7970 was in right Bios position(both were fine by default)
  4. Rebooted computer and let the USB Stick boot into dos.
  5. Ran exact commands stated by Twistid earlier which is: atiflash -p 0 tahiti.rom -fs -fp
  6. Rebooted - Display says no DVI connected, gave it 2 minutes before forced power button shut down
  7. After booting again, it booted up, installed 7900 series drivers, asked me for a reboot, and ever since all has been well on 1100/1500

So it's working here on a F72/Rev2.1 card I just purchased last week. Just figured I'd chime in and let people know that it went off without a hitch.

^^^ nice post very clear instructions all in one place.
I just saw this on sale at newegg so started to do some research on it and found this thread..

I actually had ordered a msi power editon that arrived friday for 479.99 i got a email that it came back in stock.
I had been searching for a lightning model.

and today newegg has this card on sale for 379.99 after rebate.. 100.00 is a lot.

This seems to be a nice card that can be overclocked with a great heatsink and fan setup.. This is one nice deal.
If i hadnt bought the msi for extreme benching on ln2 Id be trying to exchange it. I still may consider it.

I have to say everytime i buy a video card ( not often ) the next business day there is one that goes on sale. ( i had been waiting for a couple weeks.

This is the same steps I took to get unlocked voltages. I also had to use Sapphire Trixx, for some reason Afterburner kept causing system crashes. I've tested the card up to 1175 core, 1500 mem (1.225 volts). Very satisfied with the card now I can actually overclock it lol. Before the bios flash I could only go to 1025 core without it crashing on me.

Hey guys, I also followed exactly the same steps as Operation9. I have a Rev 2.1 7970, Gigabyte Windforce, voltage locked. Actually no problem at all flashing Bios #1 (switch) to Tahiti GHZ Bios. I did not receive any blue screen, and I did not have to reinstall the 13.1 catalyst drivers... Actually, somehow I wonder if I did anything at all?

After flashing the BIOS, my core clock and memory clock as recorded in GPU-Z jumped to 1100/1500! smile.gif However, in AMD Graphics OverDrive and MSI Afterburner they still show the original settings (1000 / 1375). Do you know why this would be? Should I be disabling AMD Graphics Overdrive?

EDIT: Reset the MSI Afterburner profile and now both MSI and AMD Graphics OverDrive read 1100/1500.

New question - can I overclock some more from here? Or is this it. smile.gif

Thanks for your thoughts. smile.gif

Best,
J

I've done the same. The card can even work on 1150, witch on stock F72 BIOS was impossible.

after

But as i understand, voltage unlock is still imposible. It was only rised to 1.256
post #136 of 205
Actually, I have some modifications on my previous post. I followed Operation9's instructions... but was not asked to re-install the drivers. Although GPU-Z showed 1100/1500 after flashing, my voltage under HWMonitor was listed low, like 1.098 or something like that? I mean, not 1.256 as shown in your last picture QNX1. Afterwards it crashed during gameplay, so I wonder:

Is there a reason that after flashing Tahiti.rom my voltage would remain stock but my clocks go to 1100/1500 as planned? What can I do to get 1.256 voltage as well, as it is surely necessary for the OC caused by the flash. Would re-installing the drivers somehow help this? Am curious. smile.gif

EDIT: Actually my voltage is even lower than I remembered - it stays at 0.850V, even after flashing the BIOS as described above. Any ideas?

Best,
Sens

Ohhh... derp. So if I run stress test or something, I can see where the voltage level maxes out? Will test this weekend, thanks for the information! I thought voltage would remain constant.

Would it be possible to flash this version? http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4290#bios

I have just ordered a Gigabyte 7970 OC, hopefully I get a rev 2.1 so I can try this BIOS flash out and overclock.

Ok I picked up my card and it is the Rev 2.1 version, I guess I need to try and follow the instructions and flash the BIOS so I can overclock.
