Where is my bottleneck?

Hi all.

I did the passmark system benchmark and i'm on 1650 points.
This seems incredibly low for my system (a friend with a 600€ 1 year old PC scores 1620).
Here is my system :
Intel I7 870 processor
Asus P7-p55d motherboard
Gigabyte 7970 Windforce
12 Gigabyte of ram (corsair , no special things)
Raptor 11K Rpm Hardisk 130Gb (5-6 years old , OS hard disk)
2 Corsair force series 3 120Gb SSD's (i'm planning on puttin my OS on these , but need to find an external HDD to backup some files)
750Watt Power supply

Now i know installing the OS on the SSD's will make a difference ,
but i find it really awkward that a system (over 1200€) like this only scores 1650Points on the Benchmark.
Especially compared to my friends 600€ System.

So , i've got a bottleneck , but where is it?

You're processor seems to be the only thing that isn't top of the line, isnt the i7 870 a i7 version of the 1156 socket instead of a true 1366 quad core with hyper threading processor?

You could overclock it..and take out a stick of RAM so it runs in dual-channel mode.

An annex , i ust saw on the I7 wiki page that there are 2 versions of the I7-870.
I'm pretty sure i've got a I7-870S version.

I can remeber laughing with it because it was a "sport" version smile.gif
I guess not biggrin.gif
"sport" version :lachen.gif: no..It's clocked lower @ stock..has lower multi..Some like that are binned higher, though..Clock it up..see what it's got! biggrin.gif
Seriously you should take a stick of RAM out....rolleyes.gif
I bet you'd get a higher score from that alone.
Put 2 sticks of RAM in slots 1+3 or 2+4.

Isn't passmark a CPU only benchmark? If so then your friend probably just has a good CPU and/or its overclocked. The Intel I7 870 should have some nice OC potential as well provided you get some proper cooling.

Edit: It seams it does some graphics card testing as well but the score very heavily influenced by the CPU. I scored 2085.3 (CPU mark over 8000). Not bad for and over 3 year old nehalem biggrin.gif

Overclock your processor or see if you can get hold a 920/970.... then overclock those too. tongue.gif

Either way, overclocking or upgrading the cpu should sort out that issue. smile.gif
post #8 of 27
I think your CPU is the main culprit here. I think its actually bottlenecking the 7970

So if the CPU is bottlenecking the GPU , is that speedwise (that i can solve with overclocking) ?
Overclocking will definitely improve the situation, if you think it could do with some more then i'd say go for a 920/970. You'll definitely see an improvement if you overclock one of those.

But sure if upgrading isn't possible then overclocking should help the load on your GPU. smile.gif
