[NG]Crysis 3 Graphics Will 'Melt Down PCs' - Crytek - Page 11

In that case there would probably just been a 1 or 2% performance hit with properly implemented tessellation. No mater how big or small the hit, performance should never be wasted when it does absolutely nothing to improve the graphics fidelity.
Edit: Let me elaborate even further. As it seams Maldo did only a quick test in one place. This does not conclusively prove that tessellation is not hampering performance in other areas of the game. After all a lot of the objects are tessellated and there is a potential to have an absolutely massive amounts of polygons on the screen much more then in the concrete barrier scene. Is he sure the FPS will never dip down due to excess tessellation. Also this test was done with a GTX 480. What about a 5870? It's a known fact that the tess unit in the 5870's are weaker than the GTX 480. So does the 10% hit still stand or is it more. If so how much more? 11%,15%? You say we are blindly hating Crysis 2 but isn't it you who "blindly" present one man's word as absolute fact.

I'm not blindly supporting him. He has facts, end of story. A lot of the articles shown don't supply actual full bullet proof evidence to back up their claims. Whereas he makes his statement, and supplies the neccesarry proof to back them up. He did take more pictures, in more locations, but (as he clearly stated in the blog), he simply had too many images, and chose to upload a select few ("In the end, I had so many images that I think the message would be diluted." From the blog). So no, he did not do a "Quick test in one place".

Also, frankly the level wouldn't really matter. Like you stated, there are tons of objects tesselated in the game (Things such as the barrier, rocks, walls, floors, ocean..), so it's safe to assume that in every level, the results would be the similar.

Now, was Cryteks use of Tesselation sloppy? Absolutely. The sheer amount of subdivisions on a single mesh is just sloppy. But does it KILL PEOPLES SYSTEMS, as literally 90 percent of the OCN community thinks? Not in the slightest, and I don't think there'd be much of a difference between proper usage, and sloppy usage now. Like his research clearly shows, it's the Extreme and Ultra shaders, not the tesselation.

In terms of the AMD vs NVidia aspect, well AMD cards are getting better and better with this type of stuff, but I don't see that as a problem with the game. Like you said, it's AMD, not Crysis at fault. ( " It's a known fact that the tess unit in the 5870's are weaker than the GTX 480").

Like I stated, stop reading articles, or hearing word of mouth, and assuming it's true. Do it yourself. It's fairly easy if you have the Cryengine 3 SDK (Or the Crysis 2 mod tools). And it may even be possible in Crysis 2 itself. Possibly an autoexec line of code or something to disable tesselation, but keep the Ultra Shaders.

EDIT: Maldo replied to someone stating the same thing you did in terms of AMD cards.

For make fair comparison would have to take game screenshots on Very High with tesselation enabled.

However, if AMD cards suffer more than necessary with tessellation, is not Crytek's fault, is it?

Really, just experimenting with settings and looking at what's been done will give you an idea.

If I can tweak the game to run faster, either in it's config files, through forcing certain drivers settings, or with modified assets, without making it look worse, it's poorly optimized.

Limiting tessellation in AMDs driver settings can almost double FPS on my 5850 without changing perceptible image quality. Tessellation has far more of a hit than ultra shaders.

Not AMD's fault. Cryteks fault.

The level of tessellation they use does not improve image quality. If it did, no one would complain.

The simple fact of the matter is that geometry performance is wasted to make NVIDIA look better than AMD when in reality, both brands of cards are capable of making the game look exactly the same to the overwhelming majority of people, with similar performance levels.

Strike 1: Hype article is full of hype tongue.gif
Strike 2: EA. Nuff Said.
Strike 3: My distict lack of caring about Crysis & Crytek who have come off as doorknobs in the past.

Other stuff:
Is the CryEngine truly efficient or is it just a brute force pig? This leads to questioning their overall code architecture.

Top end photorealistic graphics does not make a good game.

Hex.

Now if they could just make a game worth putting together a high end gaming rig for. I know some people like those games but I have never found them to be very engaging.

I'm guessing it is going to be multi-platform just like Crysis 2 but will be coming out on next gen consoles, thus the reason it will be at all punishing to PC. Time will tell though.

In the 3D world, the type and amount of Lights you use are probably the most taxing on performance.. with the Shader being a close second depending on the amount of junk you've got running through it.. polygons honestly have the least impact during renders by a long way... the only time the amount of polygons you use will have a dramatic impact on render time is when your trying to render hundreds of thousands to millions of polys and it's taking up too much RAM not leaving enough for the Shaders n Lights.
