"Melting" the GFX card is easy - the question is does it have a good GFX to show for it or is it just for the sake of being "demanding game". You can melt the GFX in various ways starting with 64x AA all the way to some more subtle tricks like crappy optimization our even downright deoptimization of some shaders or after-processing effects. Or just a "wait 1000 cycles" trick somewhere.

Edit - to add my 2c, the demo looked pretty good. Frog tech an all that.

System intensive doesn't mean anything. You can make a really basic game system intensive by using bad coding and inefficient methods. (i.e. tesselating things the player cannot even see, or over tesselating past the point of no visual gains).

That's because the world has hundreds to thousands of layers in view at any given time. Culling algorithms and the fact that the game uses axis-aligned bounding box shapes almost exclusively makes it possible to render as fast as it does. Games like Crysis will usually only have a few pixels of overlap on any given pixel of the screen, at the most (as opposed to hundreds or more with Minecraft), and the worlds are not randomized so they can have baked in details about what should be visible from any given area on a map.

I can go into this stuff in further detail if anyone would like.

BF3 is not even close to being as gpu intensive as metro 2033 or crysis for that matter.

Metro is just horribly unoptimized, crysis to a lesser extent. Maxing bf3 out in MP and SP are two different stories. Its like basing a crysis benchmark off the first level bench test and not that crazy one in warhead.

I don't really see a point in doing this. It just means that it will be poorly optimized for even high-end platforms running current generation hardware. If it follows the same precedent then enthusiasts will need to wait several if not more years before being able to run it with full graphics on maximum.

There's a difference between pushing the envelope and pushing the envelope with horrible/poor optimization.

Of course they are back to the PC's, consoles have lost all power, and to design an engine with a current console in mind would be a stupid move. But the next engine? I bet it's made with the new consoles in mind and not the PC.

I suspect they are more about where the money is at then making a truely great game/engine.

If it's a title sponsored by any particular graphics hardware brand, you can bet they will add frivolous detail to certain areas to hurt performance on the competition.

Since each architecture is better at certain things than others, intentional de-optimizations can murder performance on one while doing little to the other.

It's by Maldo, the guy who made "Maldo's Texture Pack" for Crysis 2. It essentially proves right there, that Tesselation had barely ANYTHING to do with the performance hit. Instead, it was the Ultra Shaders (Particle shadows, for one).
Edit: This also just proves how most people on this forum don't really know what they are talking about. It's all ban wagon jumping. If you guys actually took the time to put little investigation into this yourself, we wouldn't be in this mess. But that contradicts the whole OCN userbase now does it.
People just love blindly hating Crysis 2, don't they.

Now go run the same tests on ATI/AMD hardware.

Tesselation didn't hurt performance on the GTX 480 because the GTX 480 had a massive surplus of geometry horsepower relative to the times. However, it did have weakness in shader power.

Game performance was intentionally crippled on pre-HD6000 series (and even on 6000 series to a lesser extent) AMD hardware through wildly excessive tessellation.

And before I'm accused of fanboyism or something, I was running a GTX 480 in my primary gaming system when Crysis 2 was released, and I'm still using one in my 2700k rig.

Which is why so many games are horrible and why game devs/publishers are losing money. It's also one of the main reasons for some people to pirate (a game selling at $60 might interest someone, but not be anywhere near worth $60, or even $10, so since they can't pay a proper price for a low quality game, they get it for free).

When it comes to Games, you need to focus on the game itself, and forget the money part completely, as it will only hinder the games progress. Obviously this is to a certain degree as some companies don't have a lot of cash, but if the cash is the main priority, it will almost always fail.

Look at art. Art thats made purely for money usually looks like crap (aka most "modern" art - see Simpsons Ep where homer is artist, sums it up nicely) while true art that lasts through the ages were not done for money, as many of the most famous artists made little to no money in their lifetimes off of their art, Van Gogh sold one piece before his death.

So yea, make games for games = win
Make games to make money = COD.... I kid I kid... but yea, they fail.
