Obtaining fancy sound - How to do?

Thread Starter
Something many PC gamers don't often do is invest in higher quality sound cards and speakers.

I want to break the mold and be free and soar among the musical notes of yumminess (not a real word I know) , I want high fidelity sound, I want to hear ALL the frequencies!!

...but I don't want to spend a lot of money..

I'm not an audiophile, I'm not 'huge' on sound tech, I only know terms like impedance to do with current and frequency ranges, RMS wattage. Even then I have no idea what is important.

I suppose I'd have to analyse this using mathematical formulas to compare the magnitude of specific values given that Power is proportional to the product of voltage and current.

But I feel lazy and don't want to spend hours studying... so I've come here :3

FOAR ANswers!1

Budget:

$100 - Soundcard
$200-250 - Speakers

I want to get the sound card first, I looked at the Asus Xonar DX but I can't find one on eBay for equal to or less than $100

What's a decent sound card that's on eBay, that's in my budget ?

Also for the speakers I was going to go with some Audioengine bookshelf speakers.

I don't want any sub-woofers (I turn mine off), so 2.0 is sweet for me smile.gif

Thanks if anyone can help me, if not I will cry..

Depending on the set of Audioengines that you go with, you won't be able to get "all the frequencies".

The A5+'s are similar to my Polk RTi-A1's and while they can handle some low end freqs they just don't put out that much compared to speakers with larger drivers in them.

Hmm according to your profile - you are residing in Australia? Many stuff recommended here might not be available there or simply is too expensive to ship over frown.gif In your shoes i would prolly go with a Topping TP-22 T-amp with free international ship for amp and research on what's available on the Australian used audio hardware scene and hit some nice bookies ^^

Speakers suck for gaming. Get head phones, preferably closed head phones unless your room is always absolutely silent, which it probably isn't since you have computer fans going.

I have had open air headphones for over 4 years and never needed a silent room to enjoy music or games.

I think I can contribute here.

I have a set of PC360 Sennheisers, not the highest quality, but basically a set of HD555's with a mic. I also have a meager set of Polk RTi-A1's powered by a Dayton DTA-100a (about a $300 setup).

I much prefer my set of polks to my headset for games, unless a mic is needed.
