That card does run hotter and louder because it is reference design. i'd buy the one but i wouldnt pull the trigger right away on 2. This specific card is actually one of the louder and hotter cards.

I'd overclock the hell out of the HD 5870 CF and keep it longer. I'm pretty sure I remember most OCN users were running them at 1000MHZ on the core. 3200 VLIW5 Radeon cores is still pretty damn powerful. I'm sure your friend can't wait for you to upgrade biggrin.gif

The moment I bump the clock speed even a little, the screen starts to flicker.

A friend of mine has promised he would give me $200 for my existing 5870 crossfire setup, bringing the total cost of the card to roughly $160. Do you think this would be a worthwhile upgrade? I have 3 24" monitors running 1920x1080, but I only game on the center monitor - eyefinity is a little worthless for gaming.

If you are going to game on a single 1080p monitor a single HD 7950 OC is enough. Here is a good option.

Many users are playing even triple monitor eyefinity on a single overclocked HD 7950. You just have to turn down AA and you easily get playable performance.
