Whatever it was, that seems to be the big drop off. Pretty much steadily downhill from there.

Gonna be interesting to see what becomes of this. Imagine if they got all the house devs to drop pc games and focus on consoles only--since that's where the money is. Then everyone could rejoice cause Steam "won." rolleyes.gif

It would do all of you some good if you actually did some reading rather than ranting.

Umm, it would do you some good to take some of your own advice.

EA acquired DICE following the release of Battlefield 2142. (Battlefield 1942 and 2 were both released prior to DICE becoming EA DICE). 2142 was also the last PC-oriented / non-consolized / simplified Battlefield game. Battlefield Bad Company was the next release and since then they have continued to (IMO) degrade the series. Now Battlefield 4 is coming out on the same engine in the same setting less than two years after Battlefield 3.

And what would happen if EA was bought out or closed down? Enlighten us please.

Then they have to either fire or retain existing employees and hire new ones and rework existing IP's.

I was already aware of that, just making a comment.

Blame the fact that consoles are the hot spot to make money, not the publisher. They are doing what they can to make money. If you were the head of a company that could double or even triple profits by making console-oriented games, wouldn't you?

If EA went down (even though that's not what this article is talking about), a lot of studios would fall with them. We wouldn't have any more Battlefield, Crysis, Need for Speed, Mass Effect, Star Wars, Burnout, Sims, many many sports games, and more. Those studios would either fall or be bought out by other, just-as-profit-hungry companies. There would also be even less competition, so Activision would have even more control of the market while more and more studios try to copy them as it's the only successful business model. There would be less jobs in the video game industry, so a lot of people are out of work and a lot of ideas don't have the support to be launched.

If EA went down, it would leave a profound mark on the gaming industry.

That might be what happens, but no one knows for sure. Perhaps it would create space for a larger variety of independent games and studios, or for conglomerates who are not quite as heavy-handed.

Also, the "poor corporation" argument makes no sense to me. If a person is not doing their job to the CEO / manager's expectations, they get fired, no excuses. If EA is not doing their job as far as I'm concerned as a consumer, I'm not buying their products. I don't care if "consoles are where the money is and that's why the games are junk but I should be understanding about it because EA is just a corporation tryin' to make a living."

As a consumer, I have a right to determine that I don't like the way EA conducts business and for that reason I will not be buying their products. This type of consumer goodwill (or lack thereof) is part of the equation a company has to evaluate when making business decisions. EA was recently voted most hated company in America for some of these very reasons, and their stock is not performing well. Perhaps the "go where the money is at all costs" approach suggested as EA's only sensible business strategy isn't so sensible after all.

Sometimes when you have to stop an out of control fire you have to light a few yourself. I've seen what they have done to the gaming industry and am perfectly fine with them failing. I will not be purchasing games from EA in the immediate future.

Also, consoles aren't forcing EA to make the junk games they seem to produce from once-great franchises. Skyrim is a console-focused game at least as much as it is a PC-focused game and it's really great. In fact, Skyrim helped renew my faith in PC gaming after my utter disappointment at Battlefield 3.

Nothing is forcing EA to make junk except an arrogant business model lacking all respect for consumers.
