Home Theater Recommendations - Page 4

Power isnt everything when it comes to main speakers. With that much room I would say a good option would be to look into the Econowave speakers that other have built.

Having a speaker that has a higher sensitivity such as 95db 1w/1m will get you about 110 db with about 50watts. Now, that isnt what THX considers ideal, i think they what they find ideal for home theaters is more in the range of your system being able to reach peaks of 115db...

Anways, I would also say that a center channel isnt NEEDED right away as you can set up a "phantom" center through any receiver so a 2.1 setup is quite usable to start...this way you can save money for better speakers/electronics.

I see a bunch of people wanting > 50 W RMS speakers. The old Yorx and JVC speakers I run are 10 W RMAS and 25 W RMS respectively and push our much clearer sound than me Klipsch HD 500 system with speakers "rated" for up to 100 W.

Thread Starter
Thanks guys +reps.
I have been pretty busy lately, but looks like we found our speaker set...

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WGJX5A/ref=pe_54710_26216800_pe_vfe_dt1
I know this speaker set isn't the best and greatest but for the price it's really good and will be covered under manufacturers warranty...
I slightly looked at Econowave and just don't trust 'custom built' speakers and another thing is that i am going to be hanging these up... Speaker mounts are already in the corners...

The receiver will soon follow and i'll be posting up pics and reviews...
The room is quite big but we will only have couches setup for half of it... The back half is for pool/ping pong...

Ok, those sort of speaker options are always great when starting out. Some really get into their audio(guilty) and some just want something that is good, others dont care.

Like everything it is just personal tastes and priorities.

Goes the custom route has its ups and downs. If you have the tools and the experience its not that hard to build a proper box. However, when you start looking at buying active crossovers and other electronics your start to add alot of you bill.

Also, you cant get much for $250 in the custom built department. The Econowave 8s that I am going to build will be running me about $150 each and then when they are done I have to get a miniDSP to use as the crossover...so add another 300.

The cheapest speakers that you can build that are custom would be full range speakers that require no crossover or phase correction, but they are considered to be rather delicate type of driver and only good for music.

I woulda looked into monitor 70s at least for the fronts

Also a good idea to check craigslist to see what's available, you can usually get some pretty good stuff on the cheap if you know what to look for

Use Your Ears, biggrin.gif
You are going to be listening to the speakers so YOU have too choose them.
Take your favorite movies to the shop sit down and listen.

Buy as much Quality power as you can afford, you can never have too much power. Speakers get destroyed by distortion, the more (quality) power you have the less chance of distortion.thumb.gif

Lower sensitivity speakers need less power to get loud, but they also are less controlled, the higher the sensitivity the stronger the speaker suspension and normally the more linear the speaker movement, but the more power you need too drive them loud.

Tweeters are normally made of three different materials, Silk, titanium, poly-carbonate.
Silk - smooth and quieter
Titanium - bright and loud
Poly-carbonate - cheap and loud.

Roll surrounds,
Butyl rubber is longer lasting but causes lower sensitivity.
Foam has a better sensitivity but will perish over time.

There are so many different aspects too cover, It's just not possible in a thread. Sound deadening, path length, standing waves, time alignment, cabinet materials, cabling, speaker placement, etc, etc.

Anyway I hope this can help in your decision, cheers. thumb.gif

You have that backwards.

A lot of misinformation here. I'd like to know how lower sensitivity speakers are "less controlled"? What they can suffer from though is power compression, which is increased distortion and/or a change in FR at high SPL's due to the motor not being able to dissipate enough heat, etc... Quality drivers do not suffer from this at SPL's the average person listens. Don't get me wrong, I do prefer higher efficiency speakers. But if you want bass extension, you generally need a large cabinet due to Hoffman's Iron Law.

Your tweeter stereotypes are founded from cheap drivers and/or poorly designed speakers. A quality hard dome(Ti, Al) in a well designed crossover can sound as smooth as a silk tweeter. In fact, some of the best tweeters are hard dome(Be, diamond, etc...).

Newer foam surrounds can last 30 or so years, in most cases longer than we keep a pair of speakers. I currently own a pair of 1978 Tannoy HPD-385A drivers and they had their first surround job approximately 4 years ago. I also just placed an order for a brand new pair of Acoustic Elegance woofers which have foam surrounds...and have no concerns about them rotting out.

wink.gif As I said too much info to pass on in a thread, of coarse there are better and worse products at different levels of cost, but I don,t think this is what we are talking about here.
I'm sorry for trying to pass on a little info too help a guy out, and yes we could nit pick holes in each others comments all day if you want.wink.gif

Just read back through the thread again, I see you haven't made any helpful comments why don't you try that instead of bagging other people that try.mad.gif
