NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The U.S. Department of Justice said Thursday that it will approve a controversial spectrum sale deal between Verizon, Comcast and two other cable companies, after some revisions to remove terms that the DOJ considers anti-competitive.
Verizon (VZ, Fortune 500) agreed late last year to buy $3.6 billion of unused wireless spectrum held by the nation's four largest cable providers: Comcast (CMCSA),Time Warner Cable (TWC, Fortune 500), Cox Communications and Bright House Networks. Verizon wants the spectrum to help build out its 4G network. In return, the cable companies will be able to buy access to Verizon's 4G services and bundle it with their own triple-play offerings.

I heard about this coming (not the DOJ approval) months ago. One of my brother-in-laws works for Verizon up in DC doing copper provisioning. Basically he has been saying that the scuttlebutt around the office is that Verizon's long term plan is to totally kill off copper, keep with their fiber (but not push for much more expansion of it), and focus on their wireless infrastructure.
