Well I have been in the market for a laptop that was ok for gaming that was around $450. I'm not looking for something that is top of the line, expensive, with every option known to man. I wanted a decent laptop that I could play BF3 around 30-40 fps, I dont care if the settings are on low.
Well I did some research and there where a couple reviews pointing to this laptop (Acer Aspire AS5560G-7809). Several people commented about how powerful the GPU was for the price and it should preform very well. I looked the GPU up on notebook review and there where some promising benchmarks, problem was they where all with an I5-2450 or better cpu. Well I'm a little dissatisfied with it, I was thinking it would be a little more powerful. Or maybe I was just expecting too much?
I have been playing World Of Tanks allot lately so I figured I would install it first to see how it handled the game. Well I started the game and turned all options to low or off. I set the resolution to the native 1360x768. The result was 45fps during the count down, Great! As soon as the count down was done and people started moving it went down to 30fps, ok still not bad. Well then the battling started, people started firing cannons and there was smoke, it dropped to 25fps and often dipped blow 20fps. Hmmm.
With the poor performance in WOT I thought that maybe it was not utilizing the 7670. I fiddled with the settings, crossfire was on and I added WOT to the list of "High Performance". No difference. I went ahead and downloaded the AMD System Monitor and installed it. I recorded a game and then looked at the log, turns out it was working. I went to AMD's website and downloaded the latest drivers for my laptop GPU and installed them. No difference. I disabled crossfire and still no difference.
Well I went ahead and installed BF3 to go ahead and give that one a shot. I got everything installed and up to date. Joined a 64 player game on Strike at Karkand, turned everything on low/off @ 1360x768. The game play didn't seem too bad except one thing. The screen would freeze every 6 or 7 seconds for just a split second. I didn't have anything to tell me what the FPS was but it seemed to be in the 20's.
Just to compare this laptop to another with a "lesser" 630M graphics card I installed both games on my sisters laptop. It is equipped with an I5-2450 and 630m. In WOT with the same settings I was seeing around 40 to 50 fps in battle with guns a blazing. BF3 ran very smooth and was easily playable even when in the thick of it.
Right now I'm doing a little research on how to overclock my CPU as I think that might be the limiting factor. I'll post up any results tonight.
If anyone has any ideas or could offer any help please share it. Not sure if I want to return this and get a little better one before I do anything and cold void a return.
