Need/Help Choosing 16gb (2x8Gb) 1600 Low Profile Ram. - Page 3

I think they look pretty good. They are all black and very short, as short as the clips that hold them. It's a lot better than having clunky heatsinks with ugly stickers and some ram have green pcbs.

These the sticks everyone is talking about?

SAMSUNG 8GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096

Cas is set at 11, now I will be new to all this, so umm, to over clock it, I would have to low the Cas and up the Voltages, right?

That's the basics of it. You can set it to 1600mhz CAS9 settings initially if you don't want to tweak it. Voltage for that setting varies, but you can typically get it at around 1.4v if not lower.

By the way, may I ask a question regarding the ram here?

What is the difference between ram like: 1866 Cas 10 and 1600 Cas 9?

Would the 1866 still be faster even at a higher Cas?

It doesn't really make a big difference for most applications, but generally 1866mhz CAS9 or 2133mhz CAS10 should be your goal when overclocking this RAM. You will not see much difference though unless you're into just benchmarking or pure folding. I'm not sure if it matters for video encoding, but others may be able to answer that.

As far as games go, from 1600 cas11 to 2133 cas9, I notice my minimum frame rates are a little higher. Maybe by like... 1, or 1 and a half. tongue.gif

Converting videos it helps quite a bit.

So the Samsung 8GB would probably be the best bang for the buck. If I want 16Gb just buy two of the kits then? Hope it works. =D

How to lower ram timings: lower the 4 settings cL,trcd, trp, tras) 1 setting at a time.one notch at a time .lower it..reboot..see if post..lower 1 more..reboot..etc..until you don't POST..then go back to the last one that worked...and move on to the next setting. This will put close to where you should be.Next, tweak for stability.

I also usually start from CR and work my way to the left towards CAS
