AMD Sapphire 7970 Reference Card DOA

Hey i've been looking through the overclock.net forums for quite some time now but this will be my first post. I was excited when my new sapphire 7970 came in the mail today but was dissappointed to find out that the card may be DOA:sadsmiley. Basically i have a full gpu and cpu watercooling setup in a switch 810 and plugged the amd card into pci-e slot 2 while my gtx 580 was still in slot 1. I unhooked the power cables to the 580 and plugged them into the amd card and plugged the dvi port into my monitor and when i went to turn the system on... nothing. The fan on the 7970 wasn't even spinning. BTW i'm using the EVGA z-77 ftw motherboard with a i7-3770k.

I then turned it off and plugged it into pci-e slot 4 and still the same result. Then i completely removed the 580 from the pci-e slot 1 carefully(because it's still part of the loop) and still i didn't get any response from my new 7970 or any sign of the system booting. I even used to lane switches to turn off all other pci-e lanes except the one that the amd card was sitting in.

I've been building my own pcs for over 2 years now and i've had about 4 or 5 different video cards. All i've ever done is plug and play and it's never failed me. Is this card dead or am i doing something wrong? Looking for any suggestions before i RMA the card back to newegg.

You would think, however, most of my friends are in college and don't have the desire or the money to spend on a high end pc so most of them just game on consoles. This is my first amd card and so far first impressions are not good.

I build a good number of machines a year, I would say the number of DOA cards are slim, but even between chip manufacturers, and somewhat dependent on the manufacturer.

Sapphire used to be one of the topmost, but as time progresses they lay people off and service gets tighter. They will still replace it though, In fact, since it came bad, you'll get it replaced from the re/e-tailer from whom you purchased the card.

I am sad to hear it is non functional, but it does happen no matter which way you go. Before dumping AMD altogether, I recommend getting a direct replacement to try and flat-line your anger because of one happening. If you get another dead card, then I cant blame you.

I guess i'm not really mad(still got my gtx 580 in the meantime), I just wanted to play with my new toy lol. I'm going to RMA the product today and get a replacement 7970. Looking at benchmarks with latest drivers and seeing that the card is only just over $400, it really is a good deal. My other option was the EVGA gtx 670 ftw, but i already have the ek-fc7970 nickel/plexi waterblock and backplate. It's a good thing i tested it before removing the stock heatsink and i suppose i can wait a bit longer.

So I ended up RMAing the card and getting a replacement. When I recieved my new card and plugged it into my EVGA z77 ftw I got the exact same result. So I ended up getting a new motherboard (Maximus V Formula) and the card works like a charm with the new asus board. The features and bios of the Maximus V are worlds better than the EVGA board and the FTW bios was a huge headache even with the latest bios update. EVGA are great with video cards but they're motherboards are a different story.
