So mcdonalds must sell every coke variation and every other beverage so it won't upset those 10% of mountain dew lovers? Analogy by -se7en- is kinda good.

I think the bottom line is that the developer could have almost as easily have chosen a solution that most of its customers could have enjoyed, rather than one that only small percentage (I'd estimate 5%, maybe up to 10%) can enjoy.

Yeah, nvidia is probably on a brink of bankrupt. 5 to 10% lol

Just out of curiosity, can you link to game where havoc physics is used and they have at least similar results?smile.gif

I think he meant 5 to 10% of the users will actually be able to even use it based on hardware specs..

not tht 5 - 10% of people playing borderlands will have nvidia

Just cus nVidia users like me can USE the Physx, doesnt mean it will run well on a system like mine to the extent that id actually use it.

Based on recent steam survey, which is the best set of stats out there for gaming.
About 55% of PCs are using Nvidia GPUs. Now, thinking about the average consumer, how many of that 55% do you think have a second discrete Nvidia GPU?

As far as real games using havok for visual effects, I'll have to look around to see if any use it like PhysX. We did visual-only effects using Havok on LEGO Universe, but we used actual shapes (LEGO bricks) instead of particles. Even using box shapes we could do hundreds of bricks at once using the a single thread, if these had been small sphere shapes that didn't collide with one another we could have done hundreds more on that same thread. I'm not seeing anything in the Borderlands 2 demo that looks like it is using more than a few hundred shapes.

The reason why this is more often done with PhysX is likely the support from Nvidia and the fact that the system is there and ready to go for developers. Nvidia supports developers much better than AMD as well. I can see why developers are doing it, I just wish they'd go the extra mile and do this for all customers. Personally, as a developer I wouldn't want one of my games to specifically endorse one brand of hardware or hardware configuration over any other. Just my two cents though.

Yea, it's really easy, they have an APIs for that, called DirectX and OpenGL.

I know at least 20 people that have gtx470 or higher cards that don't use steam. It's like nokia claiming their phone outselled every other device by huge percentage, when in reality it happened in finland and phone was give as almost free update and just for one provider...

Where does it say you need dedicated physics card? There are many more games that use physics, so why such a rant about BL2? And it's not "%insert console name% exclusive" game, so you'll still be able to play it...
Don't remember that people made so much fuss around game dev because they couldn't run the game at maximum settings with outdated HW...
I have no idea in developing or code. But lego universe? Physics? It has decent graphics? say what? 0.o more like mario 123976 sequels of wii. No offence, it's just those games make me puke.

This is really silly.

Can you even use it with a single card? I'm not sure anyone would turn down their graphics settings just to get some PhysX particle effects and cloth, running PhysX on the card that is doing the rendering doesn't seem like something most would do.
