Meh, as the cheap guy 'round these parts I buy the best "budget" (<-- that means cheap) stuff and just get the most I can out of it.

Whether a game has PhysX or not is secondary to gameplay.

There is nothing that prevents PhysX from having real gameplay impact. It's just not usually done, probably because developers/publishers want the game to run on hardware besides the top 25% of NVIDIA GPUs.

It is what most do, actually.

Indeed the overhead from running it on a separate card often costs performance if you have a fast primary card. This seems especially true with Fermi and later NVIDIA architectures. If you have two similar cards, you generally get way more performance from SLI than from using one as a dedicated PhysX card.

A single GTX 470 is faster at Mafia II + PhysX than a GTX 460 + another GTX 460 dedicated to PhysX.

Red Faction: Guerrilla, BFBC2, and Battlefield 3 all use Havok.

The older Red Faction games use their own software physics that is part of the game engine itself. Red Faction Armaggedon might be using na in-house engine as well. Not sure.

The bottom line is if all Nvidia did were allow game developers to support PhysX and nothing more, there wouldn't be a problem. Clearly Nvidia does more to help the developers or they wouldn't partake because it would be more overhead for negligible gain. Nvidia has even hindered AMD in TWIMTBP games before, and they won't let PhysX work when the main card is an AMD, so clearly Nvidia is not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts like many of you sheeple imply. Now they are going even further in the mobile space and the fanboys don't seem to care. Nvidia is the Apple of the graphics world, and they get away with it just like Apple does because of all the sheeple that keep buying Nvidia cards because "it's no big deal" when Nvidia doesn't play fair.

Just because something is not technically illegal doesn't mean it is something you should do. We get enough of that with rich people trying to control the world and buy elections - I don't want to deal with it in my personal life, so it irks me to no end that those of you who still buy Nvidia and Apple products force me to.

I forget who said above that you could do all this with Havok just using a 'couple' of spare CPU cores, but whoever you are, I'm sorry, but you're quite off-base on this assertion.
Go look at the CPU test on 3dMark11 that runs a CPU-based Physics API. Observe how utterly rudimentary the physics effects are on that test, and how slow it runs. And keep in mind that test is MAXING your friggin CPU's ability to do physics, with basically no other 'gaming' tasks running at the same time.
If you're under the impression that cpu-based Havok could do 'easily' do what HW PhysX does, then I suppose I understand your frustration with the current situation with BL2. BUT ... this impression is entirely mistaken. You'd need like 5 quad-core CPU's to do what the HW PhysX is doing here at this same framerate (talking about the more elaborate effects you see from time to time in the video).

I'm not at all convinced this is the case.

I just ran some FluidMark tests and my CPU using half it's threads for CPU PhysX is more than twice as fast as my GTX 275 is at hardware PhysX.

GTX 275 - HW PhysX (note SPS):



Radeon 6950 - SW PhysX (again SPS is what's relevant):



I'll run it on my GTX 480 tomorrow to see what happens.

In what way? I'd be curious to see how a particle whose physics is being run only on the GPU could affect the gameplay physics simulation, which runs only on the CPU. To do what you're describing would require CPU-based physics only.

You must be mistaken, but I've not played Red Faction so I can't confirm anything.
