Can't access boot manager on acer laptop

Thread Starter
I'll make this short. My brother needs to get to access a particular file on his hard drive ( an essay for his 10th grade English class), but he can't get at it due to a reoccurring problem he's been having over the past two years hes had it where the main partition ( that windows is installed on) becomes inaccessible due to some kind of file corruption. Usually when this happens, we would take it back to bestbuy and they would fix it, but there's no time for that, as the essay is due the day after tommorow.

What I'm trying to do is to access the hdd using a bootable flash drive /w Ubuntu, and then grab the specific file he's after. However, I can't get the bios to boot from the flash drive. I can't get into the boot manager for whatever reason (f12 is suppossed to get me into it, but it doesn't). The flash drive isn't recognized in the boot order in the bios.

So what I'm asking is how can I get it to boot from the flash drive? I don't know specific model of the laptop ( I'm at work now, can't check what it is, but it's an acre aspire 5xxx series. I can check back in later with the exact number if it would help.)

Thanks

Easier solution here is to put it in your computer. Then boot yours up and access it through MY COMPUTER.
If the drive doesnt show up you need to right click on MY COMPUTER and click manage devices. Then assign a new letter and it should be accesible
