nVidia 600 series and AMD 7000 series roundup!

Thread Starter
I have a fair bit of time today, so I am going to put together a overview (I guess you could call it that) of the new 28nm based graphics cards.

We have had 7 months with the new 28nm products, which started with the Radeon 7970 in late January, and the last card being released (for the time being) is the GTX 660 Ti, which released today (or yesterday in Australia).

Currently, AMD has a large lead in compute, and clock for clock the 7970 is the fastest desktop single-gpu card on the mark (not including professional gpus). nVidia has taken the lead in power efficiency, temperature and noise levels, contrary to what we have seen in the past few generations. AMD currently has the best card at the majority of price points, with the 7970 (oc) > GTX 680 (oc), 7950 (oc) > GTX 660 Ti (oc). For the mid-range segment, we can guess that the 660 will be close to the 7870, we can assume that the 650 Ti will perform somewhere near the 7850, and the 650 will perform somewhere near the 7770. The reason I have not compared the GTX 670 here is because it is kind of in between the 7970-7950, somewhat lacking a direct competitor.

Here are the best graphics cards to buy:

$450-500: If you want to overclock, buy the 7970. If not, buy the GTX 680.

$400: The nVidia GTX 670 hands down, as it goes mainly unopposed it that price range. The 7970 stock is another option here.

$350-300: The 7950 is dropping to $325, and the GTX 660 Ti is around $300. If you like ocing and/or don't just play nVidia optimized games, go with the 7950. If you mainly play nVidia optimized games and you don't like overclocking, buy the 660 Ti.

$250: At the moment, I cannot really recommend any cards at this point except the 7850, which should be dropping to around $200, and the 7870 is currently priced at $300, which is equal to the 660 Ti, which pretty much beats the 7870. For the 7870 to become a good buy, it must drop to $250. Only when it does I can recommend it. Otherwise you can wait for nVidia to bring out 660, 650 Ti, 650.

I hope this guide helped you. Feel free to suggest any improvements.

I agree with most of this, I went with a 7970 because i know when max overclocked, max resolution, max settings, it is the fastest.

I know this, but don't forget, the 670 does not have a direct competitor from AMD.

Not correct. There are good deals on HD 7970 cards. The visiontek card is selling for USD 370 with a promo code (12% off w/ promo code HARDOCPX815G, ends 8/21).

Perf summary

1920 X 1200
GTX 670 - 98
HD 7970 (925) - 100

GTX 670 is a good card for people who want good 1080p performance , power efficiency and Nvidia specific features like PhysX. For people who want maximum performance including overclocking, better bandwidth, compute performance and future proofing get yourself a HD 7970 (1 Ghz) for USD 440 and even lesser if rebate is counted.

Do not forget, the United States has only 311 million people living there. Many more people including myself cannot get the deals you get there.
For me, the 7970 is $500 AUD.
Europe also has the same problem, I think.

For this gen the nvidia cards are badly overpriced in Australia. You just buy what's best for you, simple.

ie. most GTX 690's here are $1,500

I'd put your flame suit on, lots of differing opinions in this area. I'm pretty sure the 680 clock for clock is faster than the 7970 although, this may not be the case as everyone knows that 3dmark favors NV and Heaven AMD... and further continues in inconsistency depending on which game you play.

Actually, clock for clock the 7970 is faster. Not by much, but faster. Here on OCN we don't care about heat and noise, as long as we get the highest clocks possible! Right, right? biggrin.gif
