What kind of difference do you notice with more RAM?

Thread Starter
In addition to adding a 6670 to my other computer I don't have listed here, I'm thinking about upgrading the RAM in both of my computers (including the one in the sig) at the same time. What kind of difference would I notice going from 6GB in this (sig) computer to 16GB? I never thought there was a point of getting more RAM unless you do rendering or use a ton of professional programs at the same time, did I thought wrong?

Main rig: Your CPU is dual-channel, so switching off to 2x4GB will be better then, say, 3x2GB. If you are already operating in dual-channel mode, and do not come close to using all 6GB, there is no reason to upgrade unless you want more ram speed, which shouldn't matter much in a 1st gen i-series.

Other Rig: I assume this is the Llano one? If so, Llano looooves fast ram. Getting it a 2x4GB 1600 or 1866 kit will help it out bigtime if it currently uses 1333 or has just 4GB.

My sig computer only has 2 ram slots lol dude. I have a 4GB and a 2GB stick. I never really come close to using all of it. I use photoshop like once a month and only to make a minor change in a picture, not some big thing. I don't use any other programs like that. I use games that use 1.5GB sometimes, but I never run anything else at the same time.

You wouldn't benefit from adding more ram unless you're currently utilizing all your ram.

If you were to put 2 4GB sticks into your machine (matching pair) you will notice a difference. One thing for sure is that your machine will be snappier. Under heavy loading (when ram is being used a lot) you won't notice as much of a slow down because of the extra ram.

Reason why I have 16GB? Virtual Machines.

Yup, it's all about Dual Channel. CPU-Z should tell you on the memory tab if you're currently operating in dual-channel mode.

My 16GB is for a combo between VMs and Ramdisks, certainly not normal uses.

666MHz dual channel. Also I'm pretty sure dual channel offers like 2% performance difference.

if your looking for a better performance and snappier pc you need to invest in a ssd. adding more memory will help a little but ssd would be huge!
