Windows license dilemma..

Thread Starter
I have my current desktop, and my Envy 6Z at the moment. Both have legit copies of Windows on them.

I have a Samsung 830 that I'm going to install windows on, and use as a boot drive on the laptop when I'm in school.

When I'm home from school, I want to take out that SSD, and put it in my desktop and use it as is for that speed boost.

Now I got a feeling I'm going to be harassed by Windows everytime I do this...anyway to use the SSD in both as boot drives without issues?

I think it won't work because you'll have to reactivate it every single time, and so it won't take long before you lose access to that installation of Windows.  The product key will probably also get blacklisted.

If you only did this once or twice, then it would be fine;  but to do it frequently like that wouldn't be.

You will definitely have issues with Windows. But that will be nothing compared to the driver issues you are going to have, trying to load up drivers for two completely different machines and switch constantly. I be that would be concern No.1 if you ask me.

regardless u'll have driver+re-activation bs to deal with each time. Doubt it would be worth the effort. spare ssd ftw? they're semi-reasonable price-wise these days anyways, right?

Another risk is breaking the SATA connector on the SSD because they aren't designed for this kind of use.

I see what you want to do though now:  always use the two different Product Keys.  That probably won't work because Windows might say that they are both invalid keys for that installation.

It just sounds like it's more trouble than it's worth to me.

I'm not really sure about the Windows license, but I doubt Windows will work smoothly (or even load at all) with different hardware (especially if the difference is considerable).

Well yeah, Just sold my Corsair Force 3 for $80, bought a Samsung 830 for $90. Don't have another $90 to shell out.

Other then the possibility of breaking the physical hardware (SATA connectors), there is a simple solution for this. Dual Boot Windows with Windows.
One partition for the laptop with its own copy of Windows, drivers and software.
One partition for the desktop with its own copy of Windows, drivers and software.
You will just have to make sure you boot the right one when you need it.
