Thought on the new Creative Z Series Sound Cards?

Thread Starter
For those that aren't aware, Creative has launched the new Z-series sound cards which I'm trying to have hope for as the possible successor to the TiHD (127SnR), but will remain absolutely neutral until I can hear it for myself or read about it from people I trust.

http://www.creative.com/corporate/pressroom/releases/welcome.asp?pid=13285

I believe all 3 sound cards perform exactly the same difference being the toys/accessories that comes with it if I'm not mistaken. That said, might be interesting to snag the cheapest Z model.

Or Creative can send me a model to review. biggrin.gif

Some things to look at:
80mW into 600 ohm headphone amplifier.
Professional-grade 123dB analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) with RCA Aux-in and optical input for outstanding recording quality.
127dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) (120 for the Non-ZxR models).
Swappable Op-Amps
EMI shielding for all models.

Available December 2012.

The Higher 249 model is the one that seems to be the replacement for the titanium HD, because of the components that are used on that model. While it still have replaceable op-amp sockets. It also seems the original id of the daughter board that was suppose to be for the titanium HD. Ran over to the ZxR model instead. It also might have a headphone amp that just as good as the ST/X if not better. But we find out when a review comes out.

The 149 dollar model doesn't look like it has op-amps sockets, unless it does and the info just doesn't say it.

127dB SNR??? I hope they're not just quoting DAC spec sheets and not reporting what they saw in their lab (which undoubtedly would be given a best-case scenario for everything and may not reflect operating conditions out in the wild, out in peoples' computers).

That said, if they're quoting 127dB for one model and 120dB for the rest, maybe there's some real-world difference in performance as well. They're probably just using a different chip for the halo product, for whatever that's worth.

For the headphone amp on all the models, 80mW into 600 ohms is about 6.9V. That's very similar to what the O2, the FiiO E9, and Asus Essence ST/STX can all do into 600 ohms. Unless it's severely current-limited into lower impedances, the translation should be: "hey, this powers pretty much every headphone still in production that's not an electrostatic or the HE-6 (to loud levels; medium-loud is possible)." As for sound quality, we'll see... But this is modern solid-state electronics we're talking about. With a decent design, there shouldn't be too many surprises.

I have a feeling this will be a decent card. too bad there's not ZxR- model without the daughter board. Put that at 200 and I have a feeling we may have an ST/X killer.

these aren't graphics cards, they don't get refreshed particularly often, compared to other computer components.

He's talking about the untimely death of his Titanium HD.
