I am a bad IT kid, I have random stuff on DVD's, externals, and a old P4 that I shoved a 2TB disk in. Many of the files are duplicated across all the different forms of media and are just dumps of things I deemed important at the time with no rhyme or reason.

What I have:
  • Optical Media
  • 1x 750GB USB/Esata external (mobo has no esata)
  • 1x 1TB USB 2.0 External
  • 1x 2TB disk inside old HP 3.0Ghz P4, with Gigabit nic, was running FreeNAS
  • Pretty much any version of windows (legal) including the server flavors

What I want to do:

1.Some type of automated backup
2. An image that in case of a meltdown, has all my usual programs preloaded
3. Ability to roll back backups, in that if I got a virus on the 23rd, I can go back in my backups to the 22nd or something (if possible).

My most common issues so far have been hard drive failure (not going to be able to go raid tho) and viruses (just got hit really bad last week, no idea why). I have zero experience with doing correct backups, and although I could do just like a windows share on the 2TB then setup 'backup these folders at x time' in windows, it doesn't really help if I get a virus and it spreads to the backups :-/

Any help/insight would be great, thanks!
