[PCGamer] Ubisoft challenge Steam and Origin with Uplay - Page 14

I like Steam to some extent but I have no problem double-clicking BF3 and having Origin open at the same time or instead, just as it wont make a difference having uplay open should I ever want to play a Ubisoft game.
It's difficult to swallow the hypocrite statement. We're not talking about something deep here, we're talking about an interface that launches games. If people want to play a game despite it being on Origin/uPlay then that more than justifies them buying it in my eyes. It doesn't invalidate their opinion on Origin or Uplay.

Exactly

The best game ever could come out where the devs poured their hearth and soul and it has great graphics, gameplay, story, replay value and there would be people who would still hate it if it didn't come to steam or was on origin. This should not be the case we should care for the games not whatever delivery service is behind them. Which makes me more angry at steam for creating a delivery service in the first place.

People supported not only Valve, but their business model.
Now that business model has been confirmed as a successful/acceptable venture.
Blame yourselves biggrin.gif

I love how people believe EA's greed launched origins and valve only had the best intentions when they launched steam. Did they ever think the possibility of further profit launched both platforms?

People really need to watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BW5tn7NoRqo

Keep pretending these companies are your friends that only have the best intentions for you and require your obedience to fight the competition lol maybe their next EULA change requires you to pay a subscription fee for the steam and if you dont pay you lose all your games.

Do you see me holding a candle vigil for EA like some of the people on here do for valve? I don't care for any of these companies; all of these companies are hypocrites with their own agendas. I even recall commenting in the EA CEO speaking out against discounts thread that its absolutely moronic for EA to think this much less say it. Im just for here for the games not to pretend these companies are my friends.

I'm just pointing out the obvious hypocrities on OCN who bash one company while prasing another for doing the same; it just so happens it usually comes down to companies that are not Valve and Blizzard. I recall one guy bashing Ubisoft for having online DRM and prasing Blizzard for doing the same exact thing.

The big difference is:

Many hated Steam. Over the years, they've come to love it, with dozens of games purchased on their account. Now, here come EA and Ubi with their own new Steam. Now to buy a game we want from either of those companies, we have to buy through their client. So, now we have games A,L,T,V,H,Y,C,B on Steam, and games M,U,R,P,D,E on Origin, and games F,H,Q,Z on Uplay. I would hope that many would agree that life is just a lot easier if games A-Z were simply on Steam, the client that we already have a huge library on, that offers games that nearly every developer/publisher wants to sell through their client. It makes the patching process among other things much easier on the publisher/developer as a whole. (Think about it: the reduced server strain from EVERY player downloading the latest patch or even the full game from Steam instead of EA's servers puts a nice dent in the costs of paying Valve their sales commission). With a well-thought-out sales plan, a company that wants to sell their game solely through Steam has very little to worry about as far as server costs go. They would then only really need dedicated servers for the games if they're hosting them themselves. It would be interesting to know how much EA spends on server costs just to deliver games bought through Origin, in comparison to what they pay Valve per X,000 sales. The figures can't be that far apart from each other. In addition to the actual server costs, remember there is also lots of expensive labor involved.

Let's pretend someone went ahead and grew a collection across all three clients. Some day, they'll randomly remember an old game they liked and haven't played in a while, so they'll want to download it. The process would be: Open Steam, "Nope, it's not on Steam." Open Origin, "Damn, not there either." Open Uplay "Ahh there it is." And then, after all of that, they'll probably still end up playing with Steam (the master digital distribution race) to chat with all their Steam friends while they play their game that is on Uplay. What I'm getting at with this is: Steam has become the somewhat "universal" client I've wanted for a long time. One central hub for all PC gamers to come together into one huge community. It is basically the MMO of all gaming. No matter which game you play, you can be on Steam. You see a friend jump on BF3 via your overlay? Cool, save your single player game and join them with 2 clicks. I'm sure I can't be the only one that sees the huge appeal Steam brought to PC gaming, and the major disappointment Origin has been.

Force? He's simply arguing his position.

You can't have a healthy debate without dissenting points of view....

Wouldnt life be alot easier if there was no DD client in the first place? Particularly for modding games like Med 2 and GTA 4 if I bought the steam version the game requires so much extra work to mod, I dont even care for modding GTA 4 at this point. What im saying is you unleashed the beast that is DD when you adopted steam now that its unleashed you can't control it and leash it only to steam; you now have to deal with the consequences. This was bound to happen some might say it already happened before steam with services such as battlenet, gamespy/comrade, gas powered games etc. I recall Crysis Warhead required you to install Gamespy Comrade even if you just wanted to play the SP, but I never seen one post even mention that and people still praise Crysis and Warhead to this day as true pc games. Which makes me think this hate is more because these origin/uplay are a threat to steam than some additional program to install.

You could uninstall GameSpy Comrade. It just installed by default. It wasn't necessary to play the game.

And to be honest. If Uplay is a way around having Always-On DRM in FC3, then I'll be happy with it as a compromise.
