It's not any companies singular fault, but if EA wasn't so greedy* then Ubisoft probably wouldn't be trying it.
*I do realize however, that if EA hadn't gone for it then Activision, Ubisoft, etc would have tried one eventually anyway, EA was the first and only one with enough clout in the PC gaming community apart from Blizzard to really pull it off though.
Its not Steams fault.

If people had a problem with publishers locking their games to third party clients, the consumer should have not supported it.

Who was it that cried out that any DRM except for Steam type DRM was unacceptable? The consumer.

So now we have more of the same.

Who is to blame? The consumer.

People supported not only Valve, but their business model.

Now that business model has been confirmed as a successful/acceptable venture.

Blame yourselves biggrin.gif

Definitely, like I said, it's no single company or persons fault.

Now to buy a game we want from either of those companies, we have to buy through their client. So, now we have games A,L,T,V,H,Y,C,B on Steam, and games M,U,R,P,D,E on Origin, and games F,H,Q,Z on Uplay. I would hope that many would agree that life is just a lot easier if games A-Z were simply on Steam, the client that we already have a huge library on.
Let's pretend someone went ahead and grew a collection across all three clients. Some day, they'll randomly remember an old game they liked and haven't played in a while, so they'll want to download it. The process would be: Open Steam, "Nope, it's not on Steam." Open Origin, "Damn, not there either." Open Uplay "Ahh there it is." And then, after all of that, they'll probably still end up playing with Steam (the master digital distribution race) to chat with all their Steam friends while they play their game that is on Uplay. What I'm getting at with this is: Steam has become the somewhat "universal" client I've wanted for a long time. One central hub for all PC gamers to come together into one huge community. It is basically the MMO of all gaming. No matter which game you play, you can be on Steam. You see a friend jump on BF3 via your overlay? Cool, save your single player game and join them with 2 clicks. I'm sure I can't be the only one that sees the huge appeal Steam brought to PC gaming, and the major disappointment Origin has been.

Wouldnt life be alot easier if there was no DD client in the first place? Particularly for modding games like Med 2 and GTA 4 if I bought the steam version the game requires so much extra work to mod, I dont even care for modding GTA 4 at this point. What im saying is you unleashed the beast that is DD when you adopted steam now that its unleashed you can't control it and leash it only to steam; you now have to deal with the consequences. This was bound to happen some might say it already happened before steam with services such as battlenet, gamespy/comrade, gas powered games etc. I recall Crysis Warhead required you to install Gamespy Comrade even if you just wanted to play the SP, but I never seen one post even mention that and people still praise Crysis and Warhead to this day as true pc games. Which makes me think this hate is more because these origin/uplay are a threat to steam than some additional program to install.

I'd argue a DD client owned by a non-profit 3rd party would be best.

No, it certainly wouldn't. Steam gives us 75% discounts and eliminates the need to pick up a game physically. Games are downloaded, installed, and ready to play within 30 minutes to an hour. I enjoy having my full library of games automagically patched within minutes of me booting into Windows, without me ever having to go to whatevermygameis.com nor even KNOWING that there's a new patch. If there's anything in today's world that I dread, it's going to any store, especially down here. You can go to any random little store on any given day, and it will be JAM. PACKED. Good luck getting the game if it's a recent big hit by the way.

Perhaps I worded it confusingly instead of DD client I should have just said client. DD is still possible without a client service, look at GOG they offer deals and you can just download the games from their website without having some client running on your machine

What worries me is fragmentation, now imagine Activation does the same, they already have Battlenet from blizzard, and all this publishers start to lock their games to their DD platform, that worries me, I sure don't want to have 4 different DD platform install on my pc, I already remove GFWL, and the only reason Origin is installed on my PC is because of BF3, and has soon has I'm bored with it its getting uninstalled too, Steam is my DDP of choice, but what happens when every publisher puts their out there, this can damage the PC market has in this situation competition isn't good if they lock their games to their platforms.

I like all this competition. I'm not all that open to Ubisoft though because of their track record.
I wonder how Gamefly is doing now. It looks good but I really haven't read anything about them since they bought Direct2Drive.

I rest my case. biggrin.gif Except... those DD services don't have the auto-update features (unless I'm wrong) nor the nice in-game overlay/friends system which are all pretty convenient.

I love your avatar by the way lol

Xbox for Windows Store

All with their own exclusive games to ensure you must have their client.

Yea I don't think there is an auto update feature which I am not a big fan off, I have bandwidth restrictions and alot of games installed some games I don't want to be updated at all unless there is a way to restrict certain games from being updated on steam. Also I felt a change of avatar was necessary for something more Sausage-son like. biggrin.gif

Auto-updates are so awesome when they break all your mods, if you can mod the game at all with the Steam version (I know there's an option to not update automatically but it never worked properly).
