[PCGamer] Ubisoft challenge Steam and Origin with Uplay - Page 17

Why do I get the feeling Ubisoft is going to follow the MW and BF format with its Rainbow Six series..
First of all, let me say that Ubisoft is probably the only studio in existence that could make me think buying from EA was a good idea in comparison.

Second, I know the whole all-inclusive multipurpose digital content delivery platform thing isn't all that common now (Steam, Origin, and UPlay as far as I know) but other options exist for digital distribution, such as GOG and Gamefly (formerly D2D). I also remember back when IM programs were big and there were like 4 or 5 that everyone used, and eventually people started making apps that combined all the IM programs in to 1 interface (Trillian comes to mind, but there were others). I wonder if something like Trillian would even be possible for DD platforms. It would be nice to have all my games in 1 list, all my friends lists, rankings/achievements, etc. Plus it would be nice if it had a comparison shopping section. The only hangup I can see is getting permission from Valve, EA, Ubisoft, etc.

Which, to put it bluntly is pretty ass backwards and makes the entire offline mode redundant.
This is my biggest issue with these clients. Not being able to access my games, and not having internet access to do so is one of a few concerns. Once these clients servers go offline, i also will not be able to play my games. My games only exist so long as the distributor does.

I absolutely agree with you. Not sure why you quoted my post since it had nothing to do with the net connection issue, but I wholeheartedly agree that not being to play a game when the net is down does indeed suck thumb.gif

Those APIs would have to be made available to everyone. Some parts of Steam API are made public. I am not sure about Origin or UPlay.

All these DD client's can kiss my butt. I'm tired of being denied access to my games every time my connection goes down and it goes down alot (Satellite).

I also fear one day all my licenses can be revoked for any reason and I'm up the creek w/o a paddle mad.gif

ubisoft? no thanks.

All in all, I don't play Ubisoft games anymore. Was pissed after buying RUSE and finding out later it was ubi; and getting mucked by DRM. About an hour later I managed to get playing.

The sad part is they will just blame it on piracy I bet.

Eh, they can blame it on whatever they want, when their service fails and they fail to make money on the whole venture the only truth will be that they couldn't compete. Valve has done it, GOG.com has done it, and multiple other digital distribution services.

People act like Steam is all there is but really there are a lot of other digital outlets. I refer to the ones above as well as Gamer's Gate and a bunch of others whose names I can't recall.

EDIT: Of course Steam is the 800lb gorilla of digital distribution, I just wanted to point out that there actually are already competitors.

I love PC building because I don't get a lot of bloatware with a brand new, custom built computer. I'm really sick of having to download a whole program every time I want to buy a new game. I want to buy Blacklist later this year, so now I'm sure I'll have to download this U Play store. Ugh.

And then you know what'll save us? Thats right. Piracy.

unless programs like Steam make efforts to ensure that we are able to access our games offline (and if they ever go bust/close down) We're simply playing our games on loan. Give it a decade or so and i'd wager the games we play now won't be (easily/legally) accessible, unless these companies change their ways.

And i'd bet they don't. The only time the majority will make a stink about this is when it's too late. I like to collect my games to play whenever i please, next week or next decade (hence i always by hard copies) but as all games now are either digital download or tied to DRM like Steam, i have little choice in the matter.

I may not own the software that i purchase, but the license i buy to allow me to play the game doesn't expire. So should my net expire, or these companies expire, my license shouldn't with them.

This is going to flop hard.

And if they pull there games from other services, those games themselves will flop.

Everybody hates Ubisoft the most. So who's going to do this? $1 games is not worth it to have a third freaking client!
