Everybody hates Ubisoft the most. So who's going to do this? $1 games is not worth it to have a third freaking client!

I remember when people said this about Origin.

People waited for EA to axe it.

People waited for EA to make BF3 available on Steam after they didn't axe it.

People waited for it to "die" because they didn't make it available on Steam/they didn't axe it.

A year later and the industry has now settled into the idea of Origin existing.

If there's anything that 2003-2012 has taught us, its that a large amount of gamers will do anything to play a game they want to play and they'll do anything for cheap games.

There was no reason for even one client, let alone a third a while ago, but people are easily bought.

No matter how much virtual gnashing of teeth, the numbers never lie. CoD according to the virtual world is the worst game series ever., but real world numbers shatter that view completely and reveals just how influential internet group complaining really is. Hardly at all.

"Everybody hates Ubisoft" assumes that everybody cares about the reasons people fuss about them. I'll ask all my generation in my family what they think about always on DRM. I can guess right away that maybe one of them will even have the slightest clue what I'm talking about.

People may not recognise, but developers are moving well away from even trying to cater to the likes of people who assume everybody believes in or cares about what they believe in or care about (mostly pc gamers tbh).

Don't like DLC? That's cool, let me just go over to this mountain of people who do.

Don't like always on? No problem. Your little sister will be buying the next Sims game whether we make it always online or not. Have fun trying to persuade her why she shouldn't have fun because of your DRM peeves.

Don't like modern shooters? Got ya. Let me just break sales records selling a modern shooter to this group of people and I'll get back to you when I'm done.

It will be interesting to see how Ubi use this opportunity. It can easily make them or break them. Starting off with uber cheap games seems to have been the right move so far.

After all the golden rule with these clients, is to get people to have as many games on them as possible. Even if you have to chop 75% off the price of the game or sell a bundle of games for an overall discounted price. A customer with 50 games on a client they will NEVER be able to leave unless they want to lose access to 50 games is a customer for life smile.gif

A customer with 100 is your best friend, even if they don't particularly want to be.

Second, I know the whole all-inclusive multipurpose digital content delivery platform thing isn't all that common now (Steam, Origin, and UPlay as far as I know) but other options exist for digital distribution, such as GOG and Gamefly (formerly D2D). I also remember back when IM programs were big and there were like 4 or 5 that everyone used, and eventually people started making apps that combined all the IM programs in to 1 interface (Trillian comes to mind, but there were others). I wonder if something like Trillian would even be possible for DD platforms. It would be nice to have all my games in 1 list, all my friends lists, rankings/achievements, etc. Plus it would be nice if it had a comparison shopping section. The only hangup I can see is getting permission from Valve, EA, Ubisoft, etc.

Should be possible because Steam, Origin and Uplay all use websites with the client just servering to display that in formation so at somepoint someones probaly going to make a client that just connect to all of these.

Also has anyone noticed this just looks like a blue version of origin?

I think uPlay is already better than Origin.

I haven't had an always-on DRM issue with any of my Ubisoft stuff that sinks to the level of EA's Darkspore, which was up about 1 in 5 times I tried it before I just quit bothering.

Deep discounts at the start.

The uPlay client already has rewards for accomplishments in game that let you buy bric-a-brac like wallpapers and micro-DLC like improving abilities or adding levels to a game.

At least they're offering something to entice you rather than just forcing it on you.

I have to say that Steam far surpasses Origin and Uplay. It is far more organized and incredibly easy to navigate. The other two have so much clutter and too many steps to access games. Ridiculous.

Oh look, its an Origin clone. I suppose they won't be bringing anything new either and it's just going to be another useless client that has an exclusive game or two on it people want..

So, I opened uplay. Clicked games. Clicked From Dust. Clicked play. Game started. 3 clicks.
So, I opened Steam. Clicked Library. Clicked Doom3. Clicked play. Game started. 3 clicks.

Good point.

Oh, almost forgot.
SO, I opened Origin. Clicked My Games. Hovered over Mass Effect. Clicked play. Game started. 2 clicks.

Alternatively I can just double-click the icon of any any game on my desktop for almost instant access to any of them. Steam's the slowest in that regard.

And clutter? What? All three interfaces are incredibly simple.

And then you know what'll save us? Thats right. Piracy.

unless programs like Steam make efforts to ensure that we are able to access our games offline (and if they ever go bust/close down) We're simply playing our games on loan. Give it a decade or so and i'd wager the games we play now won't be (easily/legally) accessible, unless these companies change their ways.

And i'd bet they don't. The only time the majority will make a stink about this is when it's too late. I like to collect my games to play whenever i please, next week or next decade (hence i always by hard copies) but as all games now are either digital download or tied to DRM like Steam, i have little choice in the matter.

I may not own the software that i purchase, but the license i buy to allow me to play the game doesn't expire. So should my net expire, or these companies expire, my license shouldn't with them.

I think we'll have fun trying to get access if the owner company folds, but at the same time I think most companies would be sympathetic and offer options to those affected.

Set Steam to go straight to library, select "Grid View", and you have 1 click (2 if you include launching Steam, but since you've excluded that stage for all clients, so have I).
