I vote 120Hz for gaming, forget 3D.

2560 x 1440 hands down.

The other choice is wait for OLED (this will take a long time). By that time, OLED monitors will probably have 4k HD resolutions on a 14" display, but at a hefty price of course.

If you end up going the 120Hz or 1080p way (even if it is not 120hz), plz don't get a 27"...
I cannot get how ppl are so "sharp eyed" and cannot deal with 60Hz, but can swallow the horrid pixel pitch of a 27" 1080p monitor...really...its fine for a TV set, but being 2ft away = simply irritating for me.

If you are primarily a gamer, 1080p is better...less temptations to SLI that 690 (lol), even if you end up surrounding the thing.

But if you are the least serious about using the screen for design/video editing, plz, you should know this answer yourself: 1440p -> 3.7MP vs <2.1MP for the 1080p screens....that's nearly 2x the real estate for toolbars / preview windows etc. Whoever says 120Hz is better, well, he is just a "gamer", and that's exactly the comparison: toy for visuals vs. tool for graphics. Room in the market for both, but so different there shouldn't really be a question.

I believe the only one who can answer you is...you!
IPS @ 2560x1440 gives you a sharper image and a larger work space while offering a better display technology / colors / viewing angles.
TN offers fluidity in games and besides that I do not know of any other benefits.

Go grab a cup of coffee and think it over then choose which ever you prefer:thumb:

Whatever you say man smile.gif After using an IPS, I ain't going back to TN.

I feel the IPS features outweigh the TN in a number of ways.

And doesn't your computer have to churn out 120frames to get the real feel of a 120hz TN?

WQHD always wins. It's absolutely no contest whatsoever.

Well I feel I've got a bit of a qualification to talk about this lol.

For 3 months I was using a BenQ XL2420TX on my system (see sig). 3D was great no doubt about it. It was smooth with it off running @ 120fps, or immersive 3D. The problems overall I had with it though:

- Viewing angles are obviously an issue for TN
- Colors
- Image quality is definitely less sharp than an IPS display
- Not many GREAT titles with good 3D implementation (BF3, Batman AC, Diablo III, Guild Wars was decent and same with Aion, but Trine was gorgeous)

The smoothness of 120fps though is more than enough to validate choosing it over having 1440p if you're a gamer. It makes a world of a difference. If you're looking for more real estate though stick with 1440p.

After that I switched to my current monitor, a Yamakasi Catleap 2B. This monitor is fantastic. 1440p with an overclockable pcb to allow 120hz refresh (I've got mine up to 123hz right now). Let's get some of the obvious plusses out of the way

- Sharper
- Better Colors
- Better viewing angles
- Resolution

The resolution difference is staggering. Things are crisper, and so much more real estate to work with when not gaming, it's insane. Honestly if I had to pick between 1440p and 120hz though it would probably have to be 120hz/3D monitors. The buttery smoothness for gaming is just such a big deal. But that's also what makes this specific monitor so great. Take a look at my mini review for some more information.

Why not both? Overlord currently has 120hz 27" 1440p monitors up for pre-order (shipping late this month)

If budget was an issue - then i would probably say 24" 1080p 120hz if youre any type of gamer, heres why (keep in mind my 120hz monitor is still on the way frown.gif )

120hz TN 24" Pros:
  1. If youre sitting dead center of the monitor - it still looks decent - color shift wont be too bad
  2. color accuracy is NOT terrible on new TNs, yes IPS looks sharper but its not like its night and day
  3. vsync on introduces display lag, sure you wont get tearing but its not uncommon for people to feel the lag
  4. vsync off you get better response, but then you get really annoying screen tearing
  5. even the fastest IPS panels cant tough the response time on TNs right now (5ms vs 2ms or less) so youll get absolutely 0 ghosting. On my 6ms CrossOver, i dont really notice it to be honest but some people might
  6. GPU requirements to drive 120fps @ 1080p isnt bad as 1440p for obvious reason, for even more performance you can cut AA
  7. I suppose you can do 3D if you like

1440p IPS 27" Pros:
  1. biggest reason - lots of real estate - high resolution, things look sharper
  2. It looks plain better, from all angles - you can have a nerd slouch and the display will look amazing
  3. Color accuracy is better, again not magnitudes better - but definately noticeable - especially if you have a screen with no anti glare
  4. at 27" and 1440p, the pixel density is so good that you really dont need AA at all for a big performance boost - i only use it when im already pushing past 80fps
  5. ability to go portrait - again no color shift, some sites/formats look better in portrait mode - wanna read a comic book? Looks AMAZING when the full page is displayed
  6. everything just looks better. Not just games, but everyday use browsing, photos, videos/movies, etc.

One more note about IPS panels, is this thing called IPS Glow - at first i thought it was backlight bleed but it isnt - which kind of forces you to sit a bit far from the display (about a foot and a half to 2 feet).

Anyways hope this helps, myself - i cant wait till my 1440p 120hz comes in.

Big Mistake. 1080p @ 120Hz is much more demanding then 1440p. Also someone that play @ 60Hz does not mid 50fps. To be able to get 120Hz out of that LCD you need a lot of GPU power.

Basically in short is that IPS is good for any system. 120Hz is only good in a Beast of the System.
