So yes if you want to hit 120 FPS V-sync at 1440p you will need a very powerful graphics solution. But if you are already capable at 1440p of framerates in the 120+ range switching to a 120hz monitor will not add any additional load..... it will just look better. The GPU will not be "forced" to render at 120 FPS just because the monitor is refreshing that quickly.
In fact one vote for the 1080p 120hz monitor is that most cards will be much more likely to actually display at 120+ at such a low resolution(by comparison), but if he was running a 1440p monitor at 120hz chances are he would need nearly twice as much graphics hardware.
Seeing the GTX 690 the OP has, if I had spent that much on a graphics card there's no way in hell I would settle for 1080p vs 1440p, just because one will push that 1000$ card to it's limit, and the other will not.(both at 120hz respectively)

Read the post before yours, it's been covered.

And yeah you need serious hardware to keep up such a high framerate, resolution and refresh rate.

You covered the opinion that you will need 2X the graphics power to run a 120hz monitor.... which is wrong. You might need 2X the power to display a full 120FPS on that 120hz monitor, but god as my witness you can still run it at 1/2 the graphics power and it will work. It will even run at "120hz" you just might not get the full benefit since the card might not be putting out a full 120FPS.

Thats because vsync adds input lag as well.

Going from 120hz to 60hz shouldn't feel laggy. It may not feel as fluid and the image may not be as crisp in motion.

I sold my 120hz 3d vision display for a 2560x1440 display. I don't regret it at all.

That's what I meant, you wouldn't be running 120Hz properly really if it wasn't 120fps+.

To see the benefits of 120Hz you only need to exceed 60FPS in 2D, and it's fluidity will already be clearly noticeable. Running in excess of 120FPS+ on a 120Hz screen will only take you back to what happens in 60Hz tech:- Screen tearing.

In answer to 120Hz vs 2560x1440+, i would take the higher resolution myself.

Actually this is false. 720p video looks amazing on a 1440p monitor because 1440p is literally 4 times the resolution so there's no stretching or blurring. Given it's not as nice as native resolution content but it looks better than 720p on a 1080p screen or even 1080p content on a 1440p screen imo.

I agree, I was shocked to see just how good 720p video looks on a 1440p display. I would be content playing older games at 720p just to not have to squint to read text.

Screen tearing happens under your refresh rate too. Thats actually where I seem to see the worst of my screen tearing.

As a competitive team fortress 2 player, 120hz is WORTH IT. But so is 1440p. I use them for different things. 1440 for cinematic games (mass effect, bioshock, metro, et al) and movies and programs, but I use my 120hz monitor for fast paced games (tf2, quake, unreal tournament, CoD, SC2, LoL et al) that require more visual information per second to be sent to the person instead of better colors and 60hz. Personally, I love my 120hz and would buy it before 1440p. I bought mine only for 120hz, not 3d. There's good cheap 1080p 120hz panels out there now.
