that's cause you've only tried headsets.

getting a pair of cans like I recommend would give you the same features, and better sound quality to boot

Ok i'm stuck now between the sennheiser HD555's and the PC165. Sound wise how are the HD555's different? Am I getting the best value for money buying the HD555's if I am only going to use them for gaming and the odd dvd?

the hd555's will have a lot better sq. they are designed with audiophiles in mind. the pc165's were designed with pc audio in mind, and have the mic.

So... are you saying I should go for the 165's? As i'll only be using them with my computer? Will I need some sort of amp to run the HD555's on my computer, or will my Xfi cope ok?

no, I'm saying you should get the 555's because they have better SQ (sound quality) they are sensitive enough to be driven directly from your x-fi. however, they will benefit from a headphone amp so, at a later time you can get a headphone amp and they will sound even better.

Ok, one more question before I buy the 555's. The breakout box front panel that is included with the fatal1ty, does this act as an amplifier in any way? Also the 555's seem to come standard with the 1/4" plug, which suits my breakout box connectors. Is there a reason for using the 1/4" over the 1/8"? Contact area or something?

the front panel does have a small headphone amp, but it is underpowered and does not compare to an audiophile headphone amp. for what you want though it'll do just fine. but even plugging the headphones directly to the back of the card will yield good results

Yes, the HD555's have a 1/4" plug.
1/4" plugs while larger, are sturdier (both the plugs and jacks) other then that they are the same. you will not get better sound quality from one over the other.

I would recommend getting a Grado headphone adapter (1/4" > 1/8") instead of the Senn one that comes with. It's a lot nicer and less likely to break a jack. I'm currently sitting in the library (doing research...) and today I bought my HD595's with me. I've got a Grado adapter to plug them into the minijack on my LDM+
