The Monolith: Antec P180b build - Page 3

Hi guys. I've got my p180b for a month now and it's pretty sweat Yes its quiet, quieter than my arctic silenrium T2 which is supposed to be a quiet case. I also added a 120mm silverstone FM121 110.03 CFM(yes you're reading that correctly) in the middle. It does make some noice when running @ 100% and i wasn't able to put the dust filter back in cause the plastic hooks would stick in the fins of my silverstone.

Once I get my upgrade (see wishlist) I'll probably move that silverstone into a Tuniq tower 120 for some extreme cooling

Some reviews i've read there wasnt enough room to put in a modern PSU, but my Corsair HX620W fits quite nicely, so...

I'll also try to move that bottom 120 fan to the front so i can run the powercable directly from the PSU to the bottom HDD cage.

I think it's pretty quiet. But don't expect miracles. A lot has to do with
what kind of stuff you get for the inside.
The Big Typhoon is really quiet but not as quiet as water cooling rigs. My
a8n-sli mobo is fanless so that helps. Some PSU's are louder - I have the
Seasonic 600 - one of the quietest PSUs available.

My main decibel factor is the 120 fans - if I put them on high, noise does
go up. I also modd'd P180's lower thermal chamber by removing the stock
120 fan (and putting it up in the middle HDD chamber) and attaching a 90
fan to the front - to cool my two barracudas.

Right now with all my fans on low including the Big Typhoon VX, I can hear
a low air rumble but that's it. If I turn up the fans, it does get audible.

Your GPU card can also make a difference. My GTO from eVGA is very
quiet but other brand GPUs I have heard may not be so quiet.

ok so its been a while *rofl* and my system STILL isn't in my P180. I've been either hitting brick walls with getting the right components or i've been upgrading so much there never seemed a right time to put it into my machine or i've been doing this. My rig currently exists as in the pictures below.

atm i'm waiting for my Thermalright HR05 to arrive for the NB, and i'm also going to be replacing my 7900GT with either 1 or 2 7900GTX's that I bought, depending on how much I need cash I've also got the fan unit that would of came with Corsair Dominator RAM, but I bought it on its own. I'm also getting rid of my RAID and opting for a single Raptor with my 2x250GB SATAs as storage. I might eventually get another RAPTOR and go RAID again, but atm a RAID of 500GB is to hard to keep backed up

  • Zip-tie a 92mm fan to the inside of the case in the bottom chamber to provide airflow over the hard drives.
  • Mount the 120mm fan you removed from the lower chamber in the upper chamber as front intake.
  • Use the other 120mm fans (the thinner ones) as back and top exhaust

Chozart, when are you going water? When you actually need it, or are youan air fanboy? Clean rig BTW, wish my P180B looked that tidy...

aaaggghhh

this has to be the loooongest build i've ever undertaken. lol, my HR05 eventually arrived and now the Raptor I bought i'm going to have to return because it not the right one (its the 8mb cache version rather than the 16mb cache version)... when will it end, I always seem to be missing one piece to complete my build, either something is delayed, I compulsively update (my fault I know ) or the item needs to be RMA'd or isn't what I ordered

I'm probably going to go for 2x36GB 16mb cache Raptors now and RAID 0 them, works out just over the price I paid for the 76GB Raptor but it will be a faster setup and still have the same capacity.

Good luck with the build leimrod

jcbzhnsr1: well... I might go water eventually.. for now air is fine for me. It still gives me a good feeling to be able to compete in the top of the 3DMark benchies with air cooling

Quick question Chozart. I'm nearly finished the build and should have pics up tomorrow. Just wondering where did you say to put the 92mm fan in the bottom chamber? In your pic, is it to the left or right of the lower HDD cage?

To the right. It's zip-tied to the intake opening on the inside of the case. The fan will just fit between the intake opening and the HDD cage... bit tight, but it fits!

I keep meaning to get a P180B but other cooling upgrades seem a little important to me and I always have my side open anyways. Nice build though!
