The Monolith: Antec P180b build - Page 10

Recieved these 2 badboys on friday... oh yeah Raptor 10k rpm, 36gb, ADFD, 16mb cache goodness... in RAID 0

Bought them from the states and even with shipping they still worked out nearly 50e cheaper than over here.

The installation was pretty simple, actually it has been the most straight forward of my set ups to date. I installed a streamlined version of Win XP that is automated using nlite, so I could catch up on Survivor while it setup all my network settings and locale.

The only hitch was that XP didn't like my DVD SATA drive plugged into the Sil SATA ports on my DFI expert and kept BSODing, it seemed to install fine using one of the ports on the NVMM. Once XP was installed I switched it back over to the Sil SATA connector and XP picked it up fine, I guess it needed the drivers installed first before it would pick it up.

I'll post some comparison benchs to my old SATAII RAID0 using HDtach after this post, but I have to say these things are blistering fast, XP loads a good 8 seconds faster than booting off just a SATAII drive. Also I installed NFSC on a WD 250GB SATAII drive and it took 10 minutes, it took just over 2 minutes on this Raptor RAID0.

Oh yeah and i'd kinda assumed Antec just hadn't installed any power or HDD LEDs until I looked up about it the other day, I had the headers installed on my mobo, but turns out DFI "smartly" put the ground for the header on the left, whereas every other manufacturer always has it on the right. Anyway, switched them around and heres what they look like lit, there is another HDD led available if you mobo can output to 2 HDD leds.

Ok i've attached 2 screenshots. The first is from my previous 500GB RAID0 made from 2xWD Caviars 250GB SATAII drives, the second is from my present 72GB RAID0 made from 2xWD Raptors.

As you can see the raptor raid IS consistantly better. The only area that lets it down is the burst rate, but thats to be expected as the raptors are only SATAI and the Caviars are SATAII. Other than the benchs, the system "feels" a lot snappier, and that's all that really matters to me.

Oh and I can barely hear them even when they are going at full wack seeking. The P180 really does an excellent job at dampening HDD noise, must be those rubber grommets

I realize I am bumping a pretty old thread but you can in fact fit a fan up front. Take out the dust filter and a 92mm or 100mm (I use a Scythe 14db 100mm). It just stays put in there, then I got a 3pin extension and ran it up to my lower mobo pin out. This dropped about 10c to 15c off my HDD's.

Yeah I know this, but I have around 5 spare 12cm fans, I wasn't going to go and buy a smaller one just for this purpose.

Anyway, since writing this i've sold the 250GB HDD and replaced them with 2x320GB drives which load a good 10'c lower than the other ones, even with the 2 raptors beside them. All in all, I don't think I need a front fan in the lower chamber anymore. When I put my hand up to the bottom dust filter I can feel a decent stream of air being pulled over my hand. The pull of the 12cm middle Scythe sflex and the 12cm fan in the OCZ 700w seem to be doing a good job of pulling cool air in over the HDDs.
