Why doesn't "extreme ducting" for airflow work?

I'm assuming it doesn't, as I would have read about it somewhere if it did...

What I'm talking about is something like this:
C0hnx.png

Where you block off areas (orange lines) so air isn't "wasted" in the purple areas. How come something like this is never done? Just ineffective?

You'd probably end up trapping heat in areas that need ventilation as well. PSU's can get hot too. And Hard drives can get warm depending on workload, activity, model, age. But thats me assuming, you're welcome to try.

I've seen OEM dells with CPU ducting, its just not the most practical or aesthetically pleasing solution smile.gif

This. I couldn't see myself trying that with a windowed case but if you want to experiment, go ahead! smile.gif

Not even touching on the effectiveness.You would have to do this yourself,for reasons that are unique to you as I can not see any pre-built parameter that is not being served without this mod.

hard drives don't need much ventilation to keep cool most of the time. they don't put off THAT much heat. as for the PSU there would be some open space above it, plus you could always throw an intake at the floor, or an exhaust on the rear

Yeah this isn't anything that would be pretty or aesthetically pleasing, but that's not the goal.

I have a Dell Optiplex 330 that has cpu ducting.This ducting works well (not for overclocking though) but like many things Dell,it is not required and prohibits (or should I say "did prohibit") the installation on a long gpu

I'd say most members on here try to go with "functional and aesthetically pleasing" setups - sure on my mITX setup I can't really have a case window [it still looks gorgeous inside as I've put in a lot of work to make cable management tidy] but every case that I've had with a side window, you know for sure it looked amazing!

There are cases like the TT Level 10 that sectioned off each component, but it cost like $900 and wasn't really any more effective at cooling than say a Silverstone Fortress or any other high end air cooling case.

@Robollama:

"Extreme ducting" does work. If you do it right you can lower components temperatures a few degrees or increase your OC a bit.
You need to balance the ducting for it to work really well though. In your example picture you would need a larger inlet area.

Dell does it because it's cheaper for them to duct one fan for the whole darn case instead using an appropriate amount of fans. They also don't overclock in general and are ok with much higher temps, and when you consider the non-overclock nature it's not fantastic.
