Graphics card upgrade, Is the 660ti worth all the hype?

Thread Starter
Okay so currently I am running a single GTX 570HD (the one with 2.5g of memory found here )

Now I have always been an Nvidia fan but I am not opposed to AMD cards if they meet my needs.

Im considering upgrading to one of the following configurations:

*note* All configurations will have a custom water cooling loop.

-A second of the above card running in SLI.

-2 of the EVGA FTW 3gb 66ti's found here when they are released running in SLI. (only water cooled once the water blocks are released)

-Or a single 670 until I can afford the second one to run in SLI, Im thinking this one.

Basically is it worth it to take the slower memory speed on the 660ti's to reap the benefit of upgrading from a fermi to a kepler GPU, either one running in SLI)?
Or to spring for the extra cash now on a single 670 until I can afford another which could potentially take me a while.

Now like I said I'm not opposed to AMD cards I just haven't done much research on them, so feel free to suggest them.

All games run at 1080p and I play most of the major titles currently out now.

I'd like to keep it under $350 for each card but I will go to low $400's if the benefits are worth it. (considering I would be selling my 570 HD if switching to a different card)

Oh and if it matters system specs are: Core I7 3770k, 16gb memory, sabertooth z77, ocz agility 3 180gb, corsair 650d, corsair hx850.

Please help me make this decision!

I'm also trying to decide on a new GPU and have been reading all the review of the 660ti. IMO it would be better to get a 670 as the lower memory bandwidth on the 660ti's will really hurt performance in SLI. The other option is to get a 7950, but they're almost the same price as the 670 so it's a tough decision.

for 350 dollars , u shud look no further than overclocked GIGABYTE 7950 for 350. ITS AT 950 Mhz core and goes upto 1250 on air. Under water,, u can expect higher results...

For around 400 dollars u can get either Gtx 670 or 7970 gigbayte overclocked for 420 dollars after rebate. both perform similarly, but when overclocked. 7970 is a clear winner...

In my case it was either a $400 670 or a $310 7950. It obviously depends on where your located but for the money I think the 7950 is a great deal and if you can get a 7970 for $420 thats also a fantastic deal if its in your price range. If the 670 and 7950 were the same price I would buy the 670 but as far as I saw it was a $60-90 price difference.

You mean the Sapphire HD 7950 950 Mhz edition. OP the best option is to sell your GTX 570 and go single GPU now. When you have the money go for SLI/CF later. the options are Sapphire HD 7950 950 Mhz edition at USD 350, EVGA GTX 670 FTW at USD 400 and Gigabyte HD 7970 Windforce (1 Ghz) at USD 420 after rebate. Since you mention watercooling I would recommend the Sapphire HD 7950 950 Mhz edition. It uses a ref HD 7970 PCB with 8 pin and 6 pin power. So any waterblock which works with ref HD 7970 card will work with this too. With 1.3v and watercooling you should be able to hit 1200+ Mhz. imo the best value for your money. at USD 350 it just fits your budget too.

I say anything but the 660 Ti. The 660 Ti is a 192-bit card, there's no point in going to that when you currently own a 320-bit card. As everyone else is saying 7950 or 670 is what you want to look at. Definitely look into selling your 570 either here or on Ebay after you get a new card.

Okay so based off the very useful replies smile.gif I've narrowed it down to the following, listed from lowest price to highest.

I'm going to take ragu78's advice and go with a single card for now and do SLI a bit later on (hopefully when the price points come down)

Opt 1: SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7950 3GB 384-bit

Opt 2: MSI 2GD5/OC GeForce GTX 670 2GB 256-bit

Opt 3: Galaxy GeForce GTX 670 GC 4GB 256-bit

Max budget on the final option.

Opt 4: SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7970 OC 3GB 384-bit GDDR5

I'm really looking for the best BANG for the buck here, I realize if I can afford it Opt 4 is clearly the best, however I will be water cooling as stated in the OP so I can deffinently clock the other cards faster then what they are at (particularly the MSI card)

Currently the 7950 has my eye because it seems like a phenomenal card for the price, but I'd still like opinions for the above 4.

I would get the 7950 for $350. I think that's the best price/performance option on your list.

Since you are watercooling the Visiontek HD 7970 for USD 370 is a fantastic deal.

and even if you want a more reliable brand get the Gigabyte HD 7970 Windforce (1 Ghz) for USD 420 after mail in rebate
