is an FX 8120 really worth paying extra for over the 6100? - Page 2

only 1090t could be near FX 81xx
fx-6100 for 100 bucks is a great price. 8120 for 150 is a regular price. Id grab the 6100 at that difference.

Where are you seeing that price BTW?

TD is selling them for $104.99 AR. MicroCenter has them for that price with no rebate.

AMD is trying their hand at " Hyper Threading" and it seems to work decently for the price. I however would recommend looking into the Phenom II 965. Same price, TRUE quad core as well and it outperforms the 4100 with ease. An entire platform change is not required to get solid results, just my opinion.

For the most part I would agree with this. It depends on how much luck you would have with overclocking the 1045T. But on the other hand, you gotta deal with pure bus speed overclocking too which could mean sacrificing RAM and CPUNB clocks.
Not sure I would recommend the 1045T either.

The 8120 is around $144 on Newegg with the promo right now. For me, it's the 8120 or nothing. I don't know if I should buy it now or wait.... I know with Black Friday and AMD's new chips coming out it is going to push the 8120 and 8150 prices really cheap. With Intel chips sitting around $220, I wonder how much Piledriver really is going to be? I might just scrape the plan (purchasing the 8120 or 8150) all together if the wattage and performance of Piledriver is where I think it should be.

I responded to the OP saying no cheap Thubans. That's a cheap Thuban, the only retail one left. I had an FX 8120, and I felt it was a good CPU. Never saw what all of the fuss was about. I'm heading to MicroCenter later, probably gonna exchange a new SSD I have for an FX 6100 and board combo. Don't need it, but I'd like to test it with a copy of Windows 8.

I would summarize the whole thing like this...

*No heavily multi-threaded tasks: Get a Phenom II X4, preferrably unlocked.
*Same as above but you just want the newer product: FX-6100 with nice overclock, ideally 4.5GHz+
*Need all the core/threads you can get: FX-8120

Actually it's CMT, not HT. Windows 7 doesn't even know how to address the FX cpus at all. Even with the Windows patch, it treats it as HT which still does not utilize them to their full potential. FX-4100 is a true quad core in the sense that there are 4 logical (physical) integer cores. The reason the 965 performs better is again due to Windows. Windows 8 is supposedly better, though how much I'm not sure. Put both on Linux and watch the 4100 leave the 965 in the dust. The FX series are simply ahead of their time. That said, if the OP is running mainly single threaded apps then I would recommend a Phenom II X4. If running mainly multi threaded apps, then go with FX-8120.
