You mean aside Watson, huge code contributions towards Eclipse and OpenOffice and winning the "Best Linux Server Vendor" award?

Good to see that things haven't changed though. Makes everything reassuring, in a way.

I his defence, if someone uses an absolute like "it's harder to use than Windows" when they've only tried niche or server distros like BT or CentOS (respectively), then I think he's be right to say "give Ubuntu / Mint a try".

It's fair enough to prefer Windows to Linux. One might prefer the Windows way of manually Googling, downloading and installing applications instead of using Linux package managers (I personally don't, but I know some do) - and that's entirely a personal preference that everyone is entitled to. But I think there's also lot of misconception about Linux amongst Windows users - where they've either used Linux 10 years ago and dismissed it every since or simply tried a "expert level" distribution rather than an "entry level" one, and then assumed that Linux -as a whole- is not user friendly. Misconceptions like that I think should be challenged. Just like when Linux users accuse Windows of being unstable or virus ridden based on pre-NT experiences - Windows users are right to challenge Linux users over those misconceptions too.

The difficult bit is having such discussions amicably and without descending into flame wars - which can be difficult when talking about personal preferences and reasoning and when chatting about it over a sterile, emotionless, medium such as message boards.

I do use Linux (one machine), but it doesn't cover all my needs (both software and games), so Windows is my main OS.

Again, not really a point. All major manufactures of server (HP, DELL, IBM, etc) all have linux drivers ready to go. When I look for stuff for my blades at work they Windows server, and RHEL on the same page.

Not saying this as a windows guy, but just contesting your point. I work as a system and network admin, primarily in our linux systems. I'm in ssh sessions all day to cisco switches and RHEL boxes.

IBM also contribute code to the Linux kernel (but then Microsoft have too - in fact ironically MS have contributed more code to the kernel than Canonical have laugher.gif )

The main reason is that I don't know how to use it. I've tried a couple of times, but I just can't pick up on it. My main issue is the command line. I'm not used to using it for everything. And I don't know any of the commands. CLI is alien to me.

Also, I'm perfectly content with windows. It does everything I need it to do, and there is no reason to switch.

I'm going to try out linux mint soon, tho.

I guess I'll need to get going on the "Essentials of terminal/CLI for dummies" (which ironically is going to be written by a dummy...me). Trust me the CLI isn't as scary as people make it out to be. And if you're lazy like me...you can always just write some scripts (super easy for the most part as I can do it) and it cuts down on some typing of repetitive commands.

Because I use it at work, Solaris 10 and Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5. Also that fact when I get home I don't even want to see a console window haha, gamer too. Although I do have a dual boot Fedora 16 on my home machine.
