thats not even linux, first off, its bsd unix. just much locked down to the point where you can't do anything. second of all its mac os x, a rip off locked down pile of apple, where as a Macintosh is a locked down overpriced pile of apples hardware (the build quality is actually quite good, but the prices- insane)

I was seriously debating switching full time to linux, especially in light of how windows 8 looks. However when I started trying to make a list of what I do in windows that I would need to replace in linux I hit a wall. I play world of warcraft, I browse a handful of websites daily, I do my email, I manage my movie rip collection and my music with winamp / itunes. And l talk to my girlfriend on yahoo messenger (long distance relationship sucks). That is literally all I do with my computer, I see no reason to go through however many headaches and potential downtime just so I can say I run linux.

If I was an actual user that did work or something other than the above regularly I would undoubtedly spend more time learning it but for now I just have zero reason and or motivation to do so.

Games are the main reason. In addition, because of Windows' overwhelming popularity, it usually sports better compatibility/support for software/hardware as opposed to Linux/Mac.
I have used Linux for years but only as a hobby. For me it has never been as fast responsive or as stable as Windows. I do play a lot of games but even if I did not I would use Windows as my main OS as it works the way I want and does everything I need a OS to do.

I do not need all my software to be open source and will use what ever software will do what I need open source free or pay.

It's good for hobby work, and ESPECIALLY for an ultrabook, i just can't kick it into my ultrabook 24/7 due to WoW.

I have a 24/7 Ubuntu Desktop at home but i don't know if it'll go anymore rolleyes.gif

Also RMS = Gross.

You can do all that on Linux (in fact I do). Ok, iTunes specifically wont work, but Winamp will - though I tend to use other media players in Linux. WoW works in Linux too (via WINE) and there's quite a community that do so - though I don't play it personally. And all the rest is pretty generic stuff anyway.

I really don't think you'd have any hassle making that switch to be honest. Particularly as you've already got some experience of the platform.

Nice CSS banner tongue.gif

My choices are below, listed from most important to least important.

  • Windows or MAC (or another less known OS) fills my needs suitably
  • There are programs that I need that are not supported by the platform (excluding games)
  • Because of [a few] games

There are things that I like about Linux, and I find myself agreeing with RMS on many things, but as of right now, Windows 7 is most suitable to my needs.

I have a saying: Hypothetically, if Linux were free, being hypothetical, I don't think you could give it away. Even with an army of religiously attached nerds pushing it like no tomorrow. I still don't think you could give it away, for free. Oh wait...

To me the better question is "Why would you switch to Linux?" (Beside the obvious answer of cost.) That being said I do lot of Windows system administration. I know the answers to 90% of questions related to Windows. So maybe it's harder on other people somehow.

Also is it really that bad to get games working on Linux? I know a guy who I played Windows games with all the time (he's away for now) and he used exclusively Linux. Buggy sometimes but it worked.
