Why don't you use Linux? - Page 22

Poll Results: Why are you not using GNU+Linux?

This is a multiple choice poll
  • 46% of voters (297)
    Because of games
  • 18% of voters (117)
There are programs that I need that are not supported by the platform (excluding games)
  • 8% of voters (57)
I don't know how to use GNU+Linux or have never been exposed to it
  • 10% of voters (70)
I like the "it just works" idea with Windows or MAC operating systems
  • 14% of voters (91)
Windows or MAC (or another less known OS) fills my needs suitably
  • 1% of voters (10)
RMS is a nutcase for making everyone write GNU+Linux and should be locked up

I use Linux for servers all the time, but I don't use it for my desktop due to lack of major application support (Adobe CS6, Cakewalk Sonar, 3DSMax, ...).

This. Progman.exe > Metro.

this. sure go with arch or something I will take awhile, but with buntu, mint. etc. your setting stuff up right away rather then downloading drivers, installing antiviris, settings up defrag (you know a file system sucks when it can't defrag itself) and so on. in fedora I set the wallpaper, ran one command for the rest of my software, changed like one or two thing in the gnome layout and was ready to go inside 15 minutes.

I tried pretty hard to learn it, but was very easily discouraged after the first few hours.

Games, application support, hardware support, application standards (menus, layouts, most will all do things differently, and where windows devs do this, its not nearly as bad).

I don't mind figuring out how to make stuff work, but most of the time it never worked as well as the Windows version.

oh, missed something.. Fonts, I find the UI fonts to not look as good as Windows.

I voted 2 answers. Because of games and because I don't know how and have never been exposed. I am a pretty casual user and I just simply game, browse and overclock.

cough*metro*cough. xfce lxde and kde are fairly simple and unity and gnome 3 are great once you get the hang of it

With the drastic UI changes being forced upon Windows users, I would be first in line to switch to any distro of Linux, if it had the capability to play all the games that windows can.

My friend has a mac, and even though macs can play a lot of games that work primarily on the PC, with the few he can't play I am certain I would never use a mac. I'm told that Linux is far worse with game compatibility, so it just would not work for me.

I hope some day it will be possible for Linux to achieve this goal, but I'm not the most optimistic about it seeing how game developers make console-exclusive titles, it's not likely they'll have a different stance on Operating Systems. It's easier for tech support to deal with one OS. They probably don't want anything to do with a second, or third if they already support macs.
