I need explanations for my mother..

Thread Starter
Although embaressing to admit, my mother is quite ignorant. My mother has a number of beliefs that I want people to explain as faulty, pure superstition.

1. She believes that a router we have acting as parent to a new router of ours ('parent' according to how she had a 'technician' structure everything) is a modem and 'the router part of it is off'.
2. She believes that any direct usage of said 'parent' router on my part is bad, using belief #1 as her reason.
3. She believes that I am responsible for any and all difficulties the party she represents is inflicted.
4. She believes that my hosting of services using a custom built rig of mine 'hogs bandwidth' despite actual statistics claiming otherwise.
5. She believes that, and I quote her "you are letting people access our internet".
6. She thinks that the distribution of IP addresses is bad.
7. She believes I can ruin all our hardware with an ethernet cable.
8. She believes that the bandwidth limits of this new router of ours exceeds the parent router's bandwidth limit during usage.

Sorta off topic stuff, but I'd rather keep this all in one post.
9. She is too ignorant to be aware of a need to clean any and all devices being used.
10. She is not aware that you can order systems from a manufacturer and tailor said systems during the purchase to your needs and budget.
11. During my childhood, she has garbaged over 10 functioning monitors, keyboards, and mouses because we weren't using them.

I need these by 18:00 so I can present them, as she arrives home from work after such. It is currently 15:02.

EDIT: Just fixed the numbering. I added 8 after I checked over everything, and forgot to bump everything after that up 1.

1: whaaaaat? It should go Coax Cable -> Modem -> Router. If your modem has a router in it its a POS router anyway that should never be used anyway.

2: Buy a router, use a router, Do not buy a modem to use a router. Just like you don't buy a CPU to use a GPU. (Sorta...)

3: Wut?

4: Pure BS, speaking as a UT Server administrator, a former Trackmania United Server administrator, and a minecraft server moderator. Facts are facts and graphs are graphs. If your bandwidth usage isn't bad, then it isn't bad, end of story.

5: No... Your letting them access your computer through THE internet. There is no "our internet" there is "our network" also. Your computer, your decision.

6: Depends on who you send it to. I assume you aren't braindead enough to give it out to people who you don't trust, hmmm?

7: Purely impossible.

8: I don't understand this logic at all, all I know is there should not be 2 routers.

9: I clean all my hardware once a month. Think of it like your teeth or hair. Clean = lives longer.

10: You can IDK why you would.

11: Garbaging CRTs is illegal here, but there's millions of places to recycle them. Reuse reduce and recycle. Also just because its not being used doesn't mean it can't be used again later. Again, REUSE, reduce, recycle.

Draton no offense, but you are fighting a loosing battle on this one.
I am not trying to flame you or insult, but your just a child posting on the internet to other children for there opinion, trying to come up with an argument to make her changer her mind. Good luck on that one. I am not saying that is right, just pointing out the opposition you are facing with this. She is your mother, logic is not something that works on mothers. No offense to any mothers on OCN, but when it comes to their children the only logic that matters is her's.

Here is how this might go
1. I paid a professional to set this up and they are the professional not you, you are my little boy (and always will be)
2. see number 1, I did this to protect you from the internet
3. see number 1 and 2, you are doing the wrong thing by undoing all my hard work trying to protect you.
4. I don't know about you statistics, but every time I try to go online for parental advice the internet is slow, and I'm not doing anything else so it has to be what you are doing.
5. well if you are letting other people connect to your home server then you can't argue this point.
6. ?????????
7. you are not using it the way the professional set it up, so you are ruining it.
8. see number 1,2, and 7

9. I do clean them, and i wash your clothes and do the dishes. don't be so ungrateful
10. she knows but you don't know about her budget needs

11. DON'T even try this one. Mother Logic requires her to do this. the only way to prevent this to if you glue your lost baby teeth to the keyboard. or your baby shoes to the back of the monitor, or maybe a picture of you on the first day of school to the mouse. You can't explain it, this is just the way it is.

Believe me, logic will never work with your mother, as long as you are living under the same roof.

Once people get to a certain age there is a certain mental block to changing their ways and learning certain new things. It's just the way it is.

Yay, more parents who have absolutely no idea what they're talking about.

Unfortunately, until you pay the bills you really have to slug it out. From the sound of it, it would look like she's made up her mind to complain profusely while utilizing any term she's ever heard regarding networking. Any alternative opinion is ultimately, futile. I do agree that the outlined one-dimensional approach to thinking presents a fairly abysmal and exceedingly moronic situation, though.

Let me guess, this so called "technician" was some over paid monkey from AT&T, Comcast, or some other ISP? Yea... They are no more qualified to setup a network than my 6 year old cousin who still thinks boys are icky... They have no troubleshooting skills beyond unplugging/replugging the device(s) and hoping it works.

I'm not about other countries, but here in NZ all of the ISP help calls, are operated by Indians, and is the biggest laugh on earth, they sound so funny.

You should consider yourself lucky, most parents usually don't know what the router is and what's it's purpose at all. Best solution - move out.
