I now have a huge ammount of respect for you guys...

Thread Starter
First, mods, I'm asking you to please NOT move this thread to off-topic as it is a little on, yet still off, topic lol thank you!

Before today, I thought audio was just audio. Who cares. You listen and that's it. Well, my mind was blown today.

Went to London Audio (a local high end audio store in my city) to pick up some adapters for a cable. I was there yesterday and these funky looking speakers next to the register area caught my eye.

Well, today I had to go back and decided to ask if I could have a listen. The guy said sure and put some Elvis on. Now, I'm not a big fan of Elvis, don't get me wrong I'm sure I'd like the dude (the song he played I liked) but I'm not big on him. But wow... The audio quality just literally brought tears to my eyes... His voice RADIATED into your ears yet EVERYTHING else playing behind him could be heard crystal clear.

Anyways, since I'm into rap, hip hop, techno, etc. I like a little bass. I asked him if he could put something with more bass in and he said sure. He goes to the back and gets a Kanye West CD and plays the song "Amazing". The bass was so nice. Not too loud like BOOM BOOM but a nice thud so you knew it was there. Yet while he's rapping and the bass is going you hear the piano playing clear as day as if it were sitting right in front of you being played by a professional pianist. Even more tears flooded my eyes!

This opened my eyes. Audio isn't all the same. There is crap and there is absolute gold...

I was curious as to the cost though. Something that sounded so tremendous couldn't come cheap. Well, I was right... He said $16,000. Then there was another model above it priced at $28,000. And another above that which would cost you $60,000. $60,000 for TWO speakers. The only thing I could muster up to say was "Wow. Why buy a new Mercedes when you could buy two speakers, right?" lol made him laugh!

Before leaving he said "if you're ever around and wanna bring in a CD of your own to see what your personal music collection would sound like coming through these then you're more then welcome to!" the guy was so laid back and nice. Must've owned the place. They pretty much earned all my audio business for life now.

Anyways, thought I'd share and say that everyone here as earned my respect and hopefully I'll be where you guys are at in terms of audio quality!

P.S. I'm still shaking my head at the fact I listened to music coming through $16,000 speakers... Lol

That moment when you get headphones that can really demonstrate the difference between 128Kbps, 320Kbps and FLAC. It's a wonderful thing.

I concur. Audio is a great thing. I just hope that when I have the money to drop on expensive headphones I don't have to spend anywhere near $16,000 to get audio that good, ahahahah. I would imagine those headphones had more than quality playing a factor in the cost.

Now just wait until you get a chance to see a pair of Focal Grande Utopia EMs.

They stand about 6'8" and play music at concert levels (supposedly). Oh yeah, and they run in at about $180,000.

I haven't had the chance to see them in person, but I await the day I get to. :drool.gif:

Im most sure you can probably get good quality at a lot lower price point, but yes decent speakers are better than most of the garbage that pushed today. Now I wouldnt spend 60k on speakers but im most sure its like anything, the return diminishes as the price increases.

If I had an unlimited budget, I would purchase either a pair of TAD or Revel loudspeakers. Not only are they beautiful, but they all measure and sound fantastic too. Although, the Sonus Faber Aida would tempt me on looks alone...

My friends have a go at me for buying £80 headphones, when apparently £5 ones will do. doh.gif

And to think, £80 is cheap as far as great sound quality goes. tongue.gif

I don't even have good audio stuff, but my friends think the Z5500's are the best thing ever. tongue.gif

And yes I know they are nowhere near audiophile sound quality. thumb.gif
