Upgrading from i5-2540M to i7-2640M for gaming?

Thread Starter
Hi guys. I have a HP Elitebook 8460p with i5-2540 CPU. I mainly use the laptop for mobile gaming. I want to upgrade the CPU and was considering this one:

Intel SR03R - 3.50Ghz 5GT/s 4MB Intel Core i7-2640M Dual Core CPU Processor

My budget is around $400-450 so that one works out. I don't do eBay, been burned MANY times. My questions is, is this an ideal upgrade from my CPU for the price, or is there another model that I missed? That place has many different models, but after some research, I found this one may work considering it's the same socket.

Just looking for some advice before I dish out any money. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks thumb.gif

You can do it, but it's not going to help the laptop run games any better. It's a business line laptop meant for business needs.

Thanks for the reply. But the laptop has some pretty solid hardware. I figured it would be worth the upgrade, already runs the games pretty well. Just wanted to run the newer games even better.

I work with these laptops every day. There's nothing special about them. What games are being run?

that wont do you any good, since those "new" games are going to be taxing the gpu waay more than the cpu, and since yours is a business end model, im guessing upgrading the gpu is not possible

it runs games like Half-Life 2 and Farcry 1 / 2 pretty well. Just looking to step it up a notch. It wont run Crysis very well, that's where I'm trying to get the computer to. I've had this one for a while and would rather upgrade it opposed to getting a newer model.

Those games aren't taxing on a system. Upgrading the CPU is not going to change anything. There isn't a dedicated graphics card either. For $500, you could build a desktop that would run Crysis.

Yeah, if you are running intel graphics, you won't get very far. While I understand that you don't want to get a new system, it might be your best bet. Your laptop is selling for about 500 on ebay, and with a 400 dollar budget you can get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834246628 this with 50 bucks to spare and it will play crysis pretty darn well.

That's a really nice laptop for the price.
