My 3930k v my 1090T - FAH

post #1 of 33
Thread Starter
So something is fishy.
When 12core bigadv ended I figured stanford wants 12 cores doing regular smp then no problem...

However, with both these CPU's at stock clocks the 3930k performance is very disappointing.

3930k -
ppd = 8k-18k

1090T -
ppd = 10-14k

These processors basically produce the same PPD! Do the 3930k's pull crappy wu's because of their higher core count? Or should both processor's be pulling the same wu's?

I do use on average 75% of one core on the 3930k for other server functions, but it rarely goes over that. (94% of the processor is FAH)

What gives?

At 94% load, at at stock speeds, you should be getting at least 40k ppd.

What fah program are you using? What are your settings? Have you folded your first ten work units?

Yes 10+ wu's.
Code:
<config>
  <!-- Network -->
  <proxy v=':8080'/>

  <!-- User Information -->
  <passkey v='EDITED'/>
  <team v='37726'/>
  <user v='RunsLikeADeere'/>

  <!-- Folding Slots -->
  <slot id='0' type='SMP'/>
</config>

The passkey is entered properly. V7 client, running Core_a4, currently on 7904 with 8k estimated ppd. Ubuntu 12.04.

I would finish a 100k point w/u every 30-35 hrs while doing bigadv on it with the v6 client on ubuntu 12.04. That seemed normal to me w/o overclocks.
Then the when bigadv ended I was pulling about 20k ppd on the same client (v6 with -smp6 flag lemme see if i can post that config) same settings. I have been using the v7 client for a week or so pulling the 8k-18k. My x6 has been using the v7 client on the same OS with the same settings though. That's what I don't get.

here was the v6 fig file. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Okay, have you tried running regular smp? Or -smp 12 instead of -smp 6

Seems like those a4 WUs on v7 pull crappy PPD. I'm experiencing the same thing on 2 machines, currently.

I tried -smp 6 and -smp 12 with no different results on the v6 client.
I don't have either flags on the v7. However the client is called smp:12 on fah control.

And yeah, the 7904's seem particularly low ppd, but the best numbers that cpu will hit are around 18k ppd.
Again, what I don't get is why the 3930k and 1090T with the same settings are pulling roughly the same ppd.
post #7 of 33
That is odd. I'm right around 21k PPD on a 3570k @ 4.5, using the v6 client and pulling a3 WUs. TPF is usually 8:45-8:50. I'm wondering if I sholdn't switch my two AMD machines back to v6 for their SMP duties.
post #8 of 33
I think there are just generally a lot of junk WUs out at the moment... My 3960x at 4.6ghz is only pulling in the mid-40k range, except for occasional days when I get good WUs and it shoots up to around 100k.

I doubt it's the units, my old i7 920 doesn't get less than 18k on the a4 WUs (at least when I'm running -smp 8). You mentioned you're using some cpu time for server tasks. You could try running fah at 100% since the cores seem to really hate any form of interference from other programs. I'd also like to suggest -smp 11 but that can cause units to fail for some reason.

What is your TPF on the 7900 units? Also, what other flags have you set in v7?
